Hmm. Okay so. When I think about fanart I usually only think about hand-drawn/made stuff. Traditional od digital. I've included other stuff in the poll as well, because it really got me thinking, but eh.
I somewhat really respect people who pwn 3D modeling programs and vector art. I've tried making 3D stuff in Maya and 3ds Max, but I more or less failed because I didn't have the patience to learn how to use them properly. And Illustrator makes me want to rip out my hair. I kinda envy anybody who can use it well enough to make something great with it. Or has the patience.
But, rather sadly, I'd consider this as fanart only when forced to think about it. Fanart makes me think, 'yay drawings!' :B

Also, I dunno what to think about photomanips and graphics. I've read some of the other comments and I agree. It's graphic art. A fine stretch from fine art, imo. Not that quite a lot of it isn't brilliant. Some icons and banners are downright awesome, but I've never seen any of it as fanart. And, eer, well, I think there's a lot of graphics out there that don't really deserve the 'art' part of graphic art. Art means to be creative, to create something from scratch, to use your imagination, but there also has to be a certain level of skill involved. Be it graphic or fine art.

And I'm conflicted about photomanips. I really like those made my that Russian girl, I can't remember her name right now. She does a lot of H/D. Some of her photomanips look brilliantly fanartsy. And like Ani said, some of the stuff on DevArt is *whoa* awesome. But I'd still say that's graphic art. Thought as much as I like good photomanips, I've seen so many bad ones, my first thought about them is always 'eh'. :B
It's not all that nice, but maybe I'm biased because I make hand-drawn artses, so I see this from a different pov.

Though thinking about it in general terms...fine art + graphic art, kind of = fanart.
So, in short, I see fanart more as hand-made/drawn stuff, but if I really have to think about it, it's all rather vague and in shades of gray.
And I'll stop now, because I'm not getting anywhere, and I could go on forever. <.< >.>

I think it's jsut hard because traditional illustration has defiend fanart for so long.

It's kinda like what the Paris art school went though when the impressionists showed up you know. All of a sudden there's this new way of thinking and it's a little Whoa. Heck it took me forever to accept photomanips as art ^^;;

But considering the effort some people put into graphic arts . . well it's still art . . by a fan for a fandom . . so fanart =P

The icon I am using BTW is not one I'd qualify as fanart. That's a hack the prety pic job *L*
