We definitely keep a landline. We live in a place with earthquakes, so you really need a landline. When the huge Northridge quake hit, I got on the landline immediately after the shaking stopped and called my mom in Indiana.
These days, a quake means the cell towers are overwhelmed. Granted, I use a cell for all of my long-distance calls, because it's part of my Verizon plan, but we share two phones between three of us and it's been working fine. I don't make a lot of calls, so I gave my phone to my sister who uses it a *lot* for her work.
I'd never switch to Vonage, because 911 needs to ring through when I call them. (I have friends who love Vonage, so everyone's mileage may vary.)
