A Question for the Writers Among My F-List

Feb 15, 2009 21:23

Those of you who write, here's the question: Do you 'write in your head' when you're bored or otherwise somewhat disconnected from what you're doing at the time?

I used to think of a phrase here and there, usually when I was messing around with household chores. It wasn't all that intrusive, but it was definitely an issue when I couldn't take a break to write. These days, it's so frequent it's gotten kind of distracting in a minor way. Any time throughout the day when I'm bored, sometimes between ringing up customers, often when I'm waiting in traffic, almost always when I'm at lunch or on break (in between looking at the clock and hoping I can get back to work soon)...you get the idea.

It's not phrases anymore, it's entire paragraphs and often pages of them. I can't carry a notebook larger than a recipe file card, but I still manage to work out plot-points on those tiny pages. It's usually my novel that's rattling around in my head, but sometimes it's SVU fanfic because that's even more familiar and a bit easier to write.

Am I the only one who does this? I have a feeling it's probably a common trait among writers...at least, I hope so. It didn't kick in this hard until I pushed the SVU spec script aside and started working on my novel, with preliminary plans to adapt the characters and situations into a treatment for a TV series.
