Empire

A couple weeks back, when Amazon was offering the complete Star Wars saga as their deal of the day, on Blu-ray, I ordered the set. This is the same set both of my brothers received as gifts last Christmas. I watched one of the commentary tracks on Star Wars (I'm not going to refer to it as A New Hope) earlier in the month and finished watching The ( Read more... )

Empire was definitely the peak of Mark Hamill's movie career. He was honestly very good in it.

While I recognize that Empire is the "best" movie of the Trilogy -- best written, best acted, best directed, best story, most intelligent, most dramatic, most mature, most timeless, etc. -- I don't think it will ever be my favorite. The 8-year-old boy in me still wishes it had more aliens and that the bad guys didn't (apparently!) win. Three-year cliffhangers are terrible things to foist on kids.

So what you're saying is that Return of the Jedi is your favorite, too?

For much of my life that was probably the case. But I think original-flavor Star Wars would be my answer today.

I know that ROTJ is universally considered the worst of the original three (by smart people) but I always liked it. Even though the actors were kinda phoning it in.

Amazingly enough I watched ESB Thursday night for the first time since it was released in theaters as "The Special Edition" That was 15 years ago. It is still awesome as you have noted.

Regarding ROTJ: I have not watched it in 15 years either, but I remember when I watched it in '97 I thought it was actually better than I had thought. What I mean is I loved it as a kid, then fell into the "It isn't dark enough" trap in my early 20's, but realized that my childhood thoughts on how awesome it was were warranted.
