I haven't left the house today, despite grand intentions before the weekend hit. It was supposed to be a riding day because in a week from yesterday, the cyclists among us will by riding the 40th annual Chilly Hilly ride, on Bainbridge Island. That event kicks off the cycling season in Washington, at least symbolically. Since it is in late February, which is generally cold and rainy, I expect there aren't a whole lot of fair-weather riders who show up; I may be wrong. There are bound to be people there who have ridden at lot less over the winter than our crew.
I did get a run in yesterday, with Angela. She told me all about the guitar she recently purchased and her severe buyer's remorse about it. I think she probably bought the right instrument for the right price, but she hadn't intended to buy it at all when she went into the store. Seemingly in response, Eric got himself an iPad. While we were running, he was shopping for new handlebar tape at the bike store. We came back to my house after and watched an awesome MSU-Purdue game commercial free and highly defined. The Spartans absolutely killed in the second half, after a perpetually tied first half.
But back to handlebar tape. I may have mentioned in the past that everyone in the bike team has been identified by color by Courtney. Whereas, I had thought I was mostly blue or green, he corrected me that I was the red one. Justin was clearly the blue one - blue bike, blue bar tape, blue jacket, blue jersey, blue tires. I wasn't sure how I came to be considered the red one, but I took that persona and owned it. Now I have the red jacket, red (it's not pink, dammit) handlebar tape, red hat and red stripes on my socks.
While helping Eric pick out his new tape, I texted Courtney to find out Eric's color identity. At that point, perhaps, it had not been clearly defined. He was holding a package of silver; I tried to talk him into orange (to match his jacket) or green. In a spiritual sense, it seemed like he could be the green one (he is an environmental engineer and a Spartan). He also has the luxury of a white bike, making any color out there a good option. He stuck to his guns and went with silver before Courtney answered me back.
When I did get Courtney's response, he suggested green. I told him Eric wanted to be the silver one and he claimed that was his second choice and that, although he kind of wanted that for himself, he would allow Eric to have it. Courtney then claimed he was the blue one (as if!), but would settle in as the black one. So there you have it: Justin is blue, Eric is silver, Courtney is black, I'm red, and if anybody else joins the crew, they'll be required to be something other than those colors. Rainbows unite!
This whole episode makes me think of Roger and Me when Mike is being evaluated for his color palette. If you don't remember those scenes, he is invited into a house of ladies for an event similar to a Tupperware party or a Pampered Chef party, but it's for fabric colors that enhance your skin tone. I think you could either been warm or cool. They told him what he was, then a few weeks later, in a panic, they called him up to let him know they'd made a mistake and he was actually the opposite. I'm hoping Courtney's color judgement can be trusted for Xe Dap Cycling Club members... We couldn't cope with the setback of incorrect colorways.
