Some good lines, and it's nice to see Gene back to his old self, even though he didn't get to punch that guy.
The music was really great, it was placed perfectly: I always LOVE it when people can match their music to a scene properly!
Alex was a lot less unbearable this episode, but I think that's because a lot of her dialogue could have been given to Sam (I love the way a lot of reviews I've read include Sam in the present tense :P)
Russell Tovey (so good his parents named him Russell) was fabulous, and he amazes me ever still with his range. He's been a werewolf with a bit of a human problem in Being Human (only a pilot so far and already its got a fandom); he played a kind of forgettable captain or other in 2007's Doctor Who Christmas Special; he's been in this, playing a brave individual in a time not yet ready for him; and then he was Rudge in one of my favourite films ever, The History Boys. I loved his performance in this - it really got to me how people don't have to be so afraid of who they are any more, even though attitudes to "differences" only started changing twenty years ago or so. Actually, I seem to recall homosexuality was still listed in the DMR as a mental illness in 1981, so not even twenty years. I'm glad I live now.
Two other things:
Gene/Alex - really, really meh. I don't care about them. In my mind, Gene is actually Gay For Sam. Personally, I think Alex knows:
Gene: in love? They're two blokes for God's sake! Two hairy stinkin' bloody great blokes.
Alex: someone fell in love with you once.
As a result of not having a valid working ship for this show, I have decided, as of now, that even though Chris/Shaz is cute, I want Alex/Shaz. They are my ship. Yes yes.
I CAN'T FIND ANY ALEX/SHAZ. COME ON PEOPLE, IT'S CANON! yes, I'm allowed to be annoyed there's no fic to qwench my Alex/Shaz love when I can't write it myself. Hippocrite? me?
