Erik and I went to see Surf's Up on Saturday afternoon here in Roch.
I thought it was really cute and had a great summer vibe to it but that it wasn't quite as funny as I might have been expecting. It was still amusing and fun but I don't think I'd call it another Happy Feet by any means.
Cody Maverick (Shia LeBouf) is a young penguin with a passion for surfing that isn't understood by the penguins in his Antartic home. He happens to get the chance to travel to warmer climes to compete in a surfing competition that is a memorial event for his childhood hero. So Cody meets some characters (by voices such as Mario Cantone and Jon Heder), surfs his little heart out and meets a cute little lifegaurd penguin. Ah, but there's a few small twists. Even the penguin world is fraught with intrigue.
Not a bad soundtrack, some Incubus, Pearl Jame, Lauryn Hill.
Anyway, cute movie and a light easy watch, nice for maybe a summer afternoon that's too hot to spend outdoors. But if you generally aren't a big fan of younger movies full of CGI animals (Madagascar, The Wild, etc), this one isn't likely to change your mind.
