Chapter One Chapter Two Chapter Three Chapter Four Chapter Five Chapter Six Chapter Seven Chapter Eight Chapter Nine Chapter Ten Chapter Eleven “Good morning, everyone. I’m pregnant.”
There was the sound of silverware clattering to the floor, and of Cain’s favorite mug (“Damn!”) shattering as everyone stopped what they were doing and turned to stare at DG. Jeb tried his hardest to turn invisible and sink into his chair.
Azkadellia glanced down at her freshly buttered toast and sadly placed it back on the plate, pushing it forward “Well, I don’t know about the rest of you, but I’m just not hungry anymore,” she said with a sigh.
Elmira, age ten, nearly stood on her chair to get a better look at DG, as if she expected her to suddenly be obviously with child. “Is it a boy or a girl? What’re ya gonna name it? Can I hold it? Can I play with it? Can I? Can I?” Her barrage of questions was cut short by Ambrose pulling her downwards and giving her a stern look.
Queen Lavendel smiled warmly, a sharp contrast to her husband, who looked ready to kill Jeb where he sat. “What wonderful news, my angel! Of course, we must celebrate.”
“Of course, he’s going to marry her,” Ahamo said darkly. Jeb looked like he was about to keel over.
“Damn right, he is,” Cain added with a tone that was just as dark. Elmira, always one to be helpful, started to fan Jeb with her napkin.
Smiling thoughtfully, Azkadellia said, “My baby sister’s wedding. I never thought I’d live to see the day.” Reaching across the table, she extended her hand towards Jeb. “Make an honest woman out of her, Mr. Cain.”
“May I be excused?” he asked miserably.
“No,” said Cain and Ahamo in unison.
DG, frowning worriedly, made her way over to Jeb’s chair. “Hey, you look like you’re on Death Row. Lighten up!” she said cheerfully. “Or is the thought of being bonded to me forever and ever really that scary to you?”
“Deege, I’ve always planned on marrying you eventually,” he muttered. “I just thought that there would be more congratulations and less death threats.”
“Not when you knock up my daughter, kiddo,” Ahamo said.
“Dear, do try to be a bit more supportive,” Lavendel chided. “After all, this is a happy occasion.”
“I’m thinking... green,” Ambrose said dreamily.
She blinked. “Brosey, are you thinking about the wedding or the baby shower?”
“A little bit of both.”
The two friends wandered off, chatting loudly about wedding ideas. Cain stood, grabbed Jeb by his collar, and pulled him up. “Son, I believe we have to have a little talk about responsibility,” he said.
“I think I’ll join you,” Ahamo said.
DG watched them leave nervously. “Ah... I think I’ll go, too. Wouldn’t want him getting too bloodied up,” she said, rushing after them.
Looking around, Azkadellia smiled at Elmira. “Toast?”
