Chapter Three:
Eleven days had passed, and each morning, DG had accompanied Glitch to breakfast charming a different colored rose and adding a different message to its stem before Glitch would take it and place it on the Tin Man’s plate. Some mornings were just as hard on Glitch with the waves of jealousy that flowed over him as the man suspected first DG and then Azkadellia as they were on the Tin Man himself on others as Jeb, Ahamo and the Queen herself poked fun at him for having a secret admirer. It was all Glitch could do those times not to blush.
True to her word however, DG helped Glitch with charming the flowers and occasionally assisting him with what to say in his notes to the Tin Man. She even helped him pick out the colors for his outfit for the ball - the same would be worn all three nights so that their partner could find them if they chose, and he was happy to note that she informed him no two guests attire was the same color; and let him know the colors of Cain’s attire so he could easily spot him that night.
So, on the way to breakfast, Glitch scrawled another quick note before handing it to DG for the final flower that would be delivered at breakfast.
“Can I?” she asked, and he nodded, blushing slightly.
“Do not look for more flora, they come not your way by the light of day… if curiosity has you in its hold, look for a white mask trimmed in gold,” DG finished and snickered softly.
“What?” Glitch asked. “What’s wrong with it?”
“Nothing, Glitch,” she murmured, giving him a gentle smile. “It’s very sweet. Is that why you chose white today?”
Glitch nodded and handed her the white rose.
Using her magic once more, DG made the flower bloom to just the right time, and flicked her fingers, making the tips of the petals sparkle once more in a gold dust, then magically attached the note to the flower.
Glitch took the flower and once more laid it carefully across Cain’s plate before continuing on to his seat as DG took hers and the others arrived.
As Cain entered, Glitch dropped his knife on the floor and he bent down to retrieve it, nudging DG. Taking the hint, she leaned over and whispered to Cain as he picked up the rose. “I think you can open it now,” Glitch heard her say.
Glitch sat up, his knife in hand in time to see Cain nod and uncurl the note from the rose’s stem. Glitch swallowed as he watched Cain skim to two lines and then give a soft grunt that was followed by a sigh.
“Hmm,” the Queen said with a smile as she entered with Ahamo and saw the rose in Cain’s hand. “Looks like you got another note from your secret admirer, Mister Cain.”
Glitch blinked and tried not to blush, but it looked as if all those at the table had their eyes on the Tin Man so he didn’t feel too bad about not being able to tear his gaze from the man.
He was slightly stunned though, and swallowed hard at hearing the man reply, “Just letting me know that it’s the last time I’ll be receiving a flower…”
Seeing Glitch’s reaction out of the corner of her eye, DG reached over and squeezed his hand reassuringly with the one that was already resting in her lap under the table.
