I love movies!

Most of you probably think of me as pretty geeky and, frankly, I can't blame you.  But I've never felt like that really summed me up properly.  I'm way too sociable to be a proper geek, spend too much of my time reading to be considered a hardcore gamer and watch more movies than most people watch hours of TV.  I've never quite known what pigeon- ( Read more... )

I've seen Beowulf and Grendel and, though I liked it, I could see why it got bad reviews. While the dialogue and characterisation were both good, I never felt like it went where it should have gone. It was a film of great moments, not an overall good movie.

I was worried about Stardust, and rightly so, worried about Beowulf, which I think looks great but will end up being as two dimensional as the animation, and TERRIFIED about what they've done with The Golden Compass ever since they announced it as The Golden Compass and not Northern Lights. It's being made in Hollywood, with big name Hollywood actors and seems to be concentrating on the action rather than all the childhood elements that made the books so vivid; the fear beaten down by the strong personality, the feeling of being important in yourself even when you are dwarfed by the things going on around you, the overall theme of breaking innocence. I will hate it for not being the book, I know I will, but I am going to try viewing it without initial bias as best I can.

Never worry about ranting with me, especially not about books, games and movies! I don't like Kidman in the least and I don't think that she's right for the character but I can see why they picked her as she is pretty much the Hollywood epitemy of cold. I would have gone with Linda Fiorentino.

Nicole Kidman is definitely wrong for the part (what happened to the BLACK hair?!?) and I don't think Daniel Craig is right for Lord Asriel either. If I had a time machine I would go back and cast Jeremy Irons in that role, but Jeremy Irons how he looked in the early 90's.

Then I would continue the quest and cast Myrna Loy as Mrs Coulter.

NO!! Yes to Myrna Loy, though once again it's just casting on the ability to give the "cold" look rather than actually personifying Mrs Coulter. But not Jeremy Irons. Not at any point in his career! I love Jeremy Irons but Asriel is, like Coulter, a very attractive person but unlike Irons there is always be something savage about him. He is the contained heat in comparison to Mrs Coulter's icy attraction.

I think the military style that Craig brings to the role is ideal and the intensity of the eyes is just right. How he'll deal with working through such a demanding character is another thing but I think his casting is one of the better parts of the movie.

We'll just have to agree to disagree! I think Daniel Craig is dead wrong. We'll just have to go see it and then spit bile afterwards!
