I turned my computer on today to make a completely different post.... but my free ZoneAlarm decided to give me a big scare saying I "may be infected with a trojan which steels internet banking passwords".
Being the security freak that I am... I was surprised and yet very worried.
I was surprised because this computer is not even 3 months old and I have never done anything remotely insecure on it.... but of course I had to check. I should have realized two things: (1) the free version of ZoneAlarm is basically only a firewall and not really an anti-virus, (2) they said "MAY be infected".
After googling a lot... I found a couple of reliable sites with information to this particular virus name I had. I searched and searched my computer for the files and registry entries.... nothing... then just to make sure I started googling the name of the virus and the word ZoneAlarm, and found people on yahoo answers saying they got the exact same message today (of all days) and that it seemed to be a marketing ploy because the message offers a paid version of ZoneAlarm which would be able to protect the computer from this threat.
I hate it that I just wasted almost two hours of my day on this wild goose chase. And what do you know, two hours was all the free time I have today!
I'll try to get back online another day to actually say what I meant to say today!
