On the road to Rivendell

Dearest Pippin, Diamond wrote in her journal. I wonder if you received the message that I left for you at the Prancing Pony? I wonder if you are following after me, or if you are still at home in Tuckborough with our son. Unless you had some sort of wizardly aid, I don't suppose that you could catch up to me now, but still I find myself looking over my shoulder all of the time, half expecting to see you.

I will be arriving in Rivendell this evening. You will be pleased to know that my journey has been uneventful. I have had excellent weather and most excellent company. trickster_loki seems to be perpetually amused, as if he were privy to some great and scandelous joke. I am convinced that he is a Maiar of some sort. I was a wee bit afraid of him at first, but now I find him to be great company. He is very much looking forward to meeting terrible_dragon. His confidence in this is infectious. I think that I am losing all of my fear of the dragon! Probably this is not very wise of me, for I am but a hobbit, and trickster_loki is...something other. We shall see. The worst thing that could happen is that the dragon decides to eat me! That would make for a very sad end for me, but just think of the stories that folks will tell in the Shire in the years to come! Trust a Took to walk right into a dragon's mouth, they will say. Ha! Let them!

My other travelling companion, iolaus is also a cheery fellow, just bursting with humor and good will. In these things, he reminds me of you. In his own lands, he is a great hero. He has fearlessly fought against many foul creatures, and counts as his dearest friend a godling sort named Hercules who is half human and half Maiar. In his land, men call the Maiar 'gods' and they worship them. In all my life, I had not given thought to worshiping any other living being. It is an interesting notion. Except for you, my dearest. I do worship you in my own way.

I wonder what we will find at Rivendell? Will the sons of Elrond and their companions still be there, or will we find it to be empty? There are so few of the elves remaining in Middle Earth that even if there are some still there in Rivendell, it is possible that we may not even see them.

No matter. We shall not linger there, regardless. Onward, onward, onward! That is the song that I sing every day.

I wonder if I can get Iolaus to tell me another story? The other day, he mentioned something about 'the mother of all monsters.' Imagine that!
