Fic Challenge: What's More Important - Self-Preservation or Forgiveness?

Jan 16, 2004 19:21

It's the nature of all living things to want to stay living for as long as we can, so it seems to me that it's perfectly right and normal to put a high value on self-preservation. But still, almost all living things do die in the end, except for the elves and the Maiar, or so they say. Gandalf would know better about that.

So it seems to me that no matter how much you might value self-preservation, you're still going to die one day, and no amount of crying or begging or tricks will stop it. So maybe it's best not to value self preservation too highly or else one day when you finally are dying, you'll be mightily disappointed that you can't get yourself one more day of life, and one more after that, too.

So probably forgiveness is more important. Sometimes we hurt others without meaning to, or even knowing it. Sometimes we do foolish things that cause all manners of mischief that we never intended. We Tooks are famous for that. It would be a terrible thing to go to your grave knowing that somebody was thinking ill of you still because they hadn't forgiven you for some fool thing that you did. And what a terrible thing it would be to hang on to a gut full of bitterness towards someone all over some fool thing that didn't really matter in the end. Forgive them. Move on. That’s the best way.
