Lost in Rivendell, Lost in Thought

Mar 19, 2004 20:34

My dearest Pippin, Diamond wrote in her journal. I am so weary that I ache. I have not slept for two days; now, it is all I think about! I feel like I could drift away even as I am writing these words ( Read more... )

A shadow moves across the window... terrible_dragon March 25 2004, 05:36:47 UTC
As Diamond wanders around trying to find her way, she enters a large, airy, but empty room with large windows which look out onto the gardens. As she looks over at the window, a shadow falls across it, as though a great cloud had covered the sun... but the sun is still shining brightly on the flowers in the garden! The shadow is within the room! Whirling around, Diamond sees the strangest sight: floating in the air before her, apparently solid (for it casts a shadow, after all) but cut off at the neck as though all the rest were invisible, is the disembodied head of Smaug, the Dragon! It is not so strange after all, as in just such a manner did he appear to her before; but Diamond had thought never to see the old wyrm again! As soon as she looks, the head speaks.

Hello, little Hobbit! I am a little late, I know, but I have come to give you my thanks for your present. I am only sorry that I could not greet you properly when you arrived; but I was sleeping. Dragons sleep long and deeply, I fear. *he grins*

Ooh! Smaug! How lovely to see you!

Diamond looks around quickly to see if any of the elves are nearby. Should you be here? What if the elves see you? Well, see your head at any rate?

Then I will simply vanish! *chuckles* They cannot harm me here, neither can I harm them more is the pity...

I have tried your Cleve, and I was greatly impressed. Its effect was... inflammatory. I have been wondering whether I could use it as ammunition to increase the power of my breath, but could not carry all those barrels into battle with me!

*Looks at you intently*
Little Hobbit... you were not trying to blow me up, were you?

Blow you up? Why...oooh! *puts her hand over her mouth and gives Smaug a mortified expression*

You know, it didn't really occur to me, but if you through alcohol onto a fire, it blazes up something fierce! Did you breath fire on it? Oh my! That must hae been quite impressive! But no, no! I wasn't trying to blow you up at all!

Aside from the ...blowing up part, it was to your liking, then? I'm so glad! Perhaps one day you could try some ale or a mug of good beer! Between you and me, if I was going to use any alcohol as ammunition, I'd use the beer 'cause I don't care for it much, and I'd save The Cleeve for drinking!

*Chuckles mightily*
Ah-ha, I rather thought it had been an accident! What would you know of the internal workings of Dragons? Well, see you, my belly is full of fire, for that is the seat of the furnace for my devastating breath. And the Cleeve did blaze up fiercely when it met my middle! But no harm done, and some spectacular fireballs which amused Loki, at any rate.

I did enjoy the taste of it, to be sure. And it has given me a new experience, which I admit was not so pleasant... now I know what it is to be drunk, and worse, to feel the after effects a night later! But again, no harm done, and it has solved for me the riddle of one of the questions my Palantir is always asking, in payment for my use of it. So fear not, I hold no blame to you for a merry night's antics! I think though, that I will never drink quite so much in future - and I must work out a way of extracting the liquid in smaller doses, for it seems that one barrel is too much!

A whole barrel! Ach! No wonder you got drunk! You're supposed to have just a wee dram. Poor dear! You must have had quite a spectacular headache!

*Attempts to look all big eyed, droopy eared and pathetic while nodding vigorously*
Ouch... *winces and nods less vigorously*

Yes, I still do have a headache... and I do not think this is helping! I should like to speak with you in person, but I know you cannot come back again all this way alone. Loki has offered to bring you, and take you back again, all within an hour! What say you to that?

*Peers about and then leans confidingly closer*
But I would prefer it if you did not tell the Elves what you are about. They do not like me, and I fear they would not approve, and would prevent your coming. It can be our little secret! *winks*

*Diamond considers this offer silently. If she told no one where she was going and then something went wrong, who would know how to find her and give her aid? No one. Of course, if she told them where she was going and then something went wrong anyway, even if they knew where she was, how would they get there to help in time? They couldn't.

And Smaug was correct. The elves would by no means approve of her going to see him on her own...but that had been her intention all along, so...*

I'll come.

*Purrs*
Excellent! I was so sorry to miss you the first time, I shall look forward to your coming. Of course, now we must wait upon the good trickster_loki. If you will excuse me, I shall depart to go and remind him!
*Bows his head to you courteously, and his image vanishes*

[OOC: I am around most of the time atm and will keep a check on posts so all we're waiting for is Loki's mun to bring Diamond over to Smaug's lj and then we can carry on the conversation - there shouldn't be too much lag at my end, I hope!]

The dragon is back! terrible_dragon March 31 2004, 07:30:12 UTC
This time in the deep of night, disturbing your slumber with his sibilant whisper, there is no accompanying image - just the soft voice, seeming to speak right next to your ear.

Diamond... little Diamond? Do you hear me? I fear Loki has not honoured our arrangement, I cannot think what might have happened to him. Now what are we to do, hmmmm?

Diamond wakes suddenly. At first she thought that she'd been dreaming of the dragon, but then she heard his voice and knew that it was no dream!

Well I'm sure I don't know what might have become of Loki, but I can hardly expect a Maia to answer to the needs of a wee hobbit such as me! Maia are mysterious! And you can hardly come here. The way these elves speak, they'd surely be after you with arrows and swords and goodness knows what sort of elfish magic.

I cannot stray too far from here, for Iolaus and Joxer may need me. But I could borrow one of the elfish horses and ride out to meet you! It would take ages if I were to ride my pony Plum, but I'm not afraid of riding a horse! I've ridden one before. It wasn't too terrifying!*Diamond slipped out of bed and dressed. She hastily scrawled out a note and left it for Iolaus, and then she went out to the stables and looked over the horses. A bay mare flicked her ears forward and nickered softly. Diamond went over to the mare and the horse lowered her head and let Diamond pet her ( ... )
