GAMD: 23-December-2022, Macau

Dec 24, 2022 00:11

Hello all! Today... was a journey... The Macau Government just implemented some new Covid-related policy three days ago. Essentially, it went from a total draconian control of must-quarantine-if-coming-in-from-overseas and daily itinerary reporting and check-ins for tracing possible contamination... to... a total laissez-faire "even if you got ( Read more... )

Fingers crossed you won't catch it.

My Dad's actually feeling pretty good, thanks! Right now, some old friend/compatriot now based in New Zealand called him on a Facebook messenger phonecall, and despite the conversation being in German (so I can't really catch everything), my Dad is (still) complaining about the refugees situation in Austria... despite his not being in Austria either currently, nor in recent years, and going all "schreichlich! scheitz!!" (because his phone suddenly plays some other video while he is on the video call).

I tested myself this morning and I still haven't caught it! Fingers crossed!

I hope your dad is okay.

How are you liking Klara and the Sun? I read it last year and really enjoyed it. I also like Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro, and want to check out more of his books.

Merry Christmas! I hope nobody else in your family gets sick, including you.

Thanks! My Dad's feeling good. He's complaining and all that (my reply comment to the above says it all... he's able to scream schreichlich and scheitz about stuff on a video call).

I enjoy Kazuo Ishiguros books because they sort of give me this creepy uneasy feeling LOL. The Remains of the Day was so far the most normal of them. There was another about a detective guy looking for his mom (I forget the actual book title at the moment) that was also normal-ish. Never Let Me Go gave me uneasy feelings and that reveal was what I liked best... the bone-chilling and hair-raising at the horror when I finally understood what those people were.

I'm getting similar feels with Klara and Sun, but while it's pretty out there that she's a robot, there are parts of the book that makes me confused. Like, so far I get Josie is the human, but then there are parts where it says Josie (or other people) is jumping from screen to screen and then I'm slightly confused as to why. But I'll read on, I'm half way through.

edit to add: oh and I tested this ( ... )

I agree about the creepy feeling. His books are intriguing.

How did you like Klara and the Sun in the end?

I don't remember that part, but I think it might refer to the fact that the robots see things in panels? Their vision works differently.

I didn't have too much trouble understanding their world with little context, and I imagine it's clearer when you read the book a second time.

Man, that coconut, lime and salt thing sounds fantastic! I always heard that song by Harry Nilsson and for some reason never thought to make it in real life. Now i want to.

It's almost funny how totally and utterly China (and i guess now Macau) just did a total U-turn on pandemic measures. Like, you'd think they'd at least try to draw it down to save face, but they're just "nope, cancel everything, and rewrite the history to pretend like Zero COVID was never a thing at all". I'm actually more worried about visiting China/HK/Macau now than i was a few weeks ago 🙈 I feel like there needs to be a few months for things to shake out a bit.

I heard mainlanders are trying to come over to Macau to get foreign vaccines, is that really happening?

Anyway, hang in, and hope your fam gets well soon.

hm... not the vaccine exactly. Free vaccine is only for local residents and "blue card holders" (workers).

What is happening is mainlanders coming to Macau and clearing the shelves of "Panadol". Panadol is a medicine brand, it's basically paracematol, but I don't know the press release of where and by whom that quoted "Panadol" the brand, so everyone's out to get them. Pharmacy shelves are virtually empty of Panadol tablets. Any normal day I could buy a box of Panadol with 24 tablets for say less than $50... now it's like $120 for a box of Panadol with 8 tablets, it's crazy.

I'm not too hung up over it as I usually avoid taking medicine, and I think other brand paracematol tablets should work as well. But yeah... a few years back it was the baby formula (mainlanders coming just to buy baby formula) and now, it's panadol...

Cute day! Happy holidays and I’m sorry to hear about your dad! Glad you all caught it in time.

I don’t know about the NYC library Libby, by the way. I don’t think I can do that with my libraries (Seattle and Chicago).
