1. Kevin Scott MacMichael came into Robert Plant's band in the Fate of Nations era, he played on several tracks(including Calling To You) from this album. MacMichael recalled when he auditioned for Plant, '"Play me something," he said. He's about my age so the first things that came to mind were songs by Buffalo Springfield and Moby Grape. His jaw just dropped and he picked me up off the sofa and said: "Never leave me." The partnership lasted the single album and a world tour before Plant reunited with Jimmy Page.
2. Robert did scream "Oh Jimmy" at the end of Calling To You.
3. After the Coverdale/Page tour was canceled, Jimmy Page was seen at the backstage at Robert's concert in Boston end November 1993. In December Robert and his band went back to Europa to finish the tour while Jimmy headed Japan for 8 gigs with Coverdale. We all know what happened later.
4. The words in ** are Kevin's thoughts.
They were sitting together on the plane back to England when Kevin started the conversation.
"Well, wanna talk?"
Robert was slowly sipping on a glass of wine when he answered,"what ever on your mind, I'm full ears."
MacMichael smiled:"Yeah, since he left, now you have eyes and ears for the others again."
Robert blinked and then returned the smile, punching Kevin slightly in the ribs, til the guitarist turned more serious and said:"Ok now, I think there's indeed something we should talk. About the last month of us work together."
Robert looked at him for a moment:"What do you mean?"
"You know very well what I mean. You might haven't thought about it yet, but I'm sure that's something you should think about."
"God Kevin," Robert shifted a bit uneasily in his chair,"I don't know what to s..."
"It doesn't matter, yet" Kevin interrupted him,"but surely it will matter in the following months, won't it? You're going back to him, or better to say, you two are going back to each other, I don't think you'd need me anymore."
"It's not fair to say that!" the singer protested.
"Why isn't it? Haven't you and Jimmy already talked about a new project together? Why would you want to have another guitarist while you can have Jimmy Page?"
"Kevin," Robert put a hand on the guitarist's shoulder,"I didn't take you to replace Jimmy. None of my guitarists was meant to replace Jimmy."
*Because none of us can* McMichael smiled at him, "I know. Remember my audition? You were sitting there and having a glass of wine, just like now, then you almost dropped it when I played you some Moby Grape."
*and you asked me never to leave you*
But still it made him happy to see Robert's eyes light up and his lips slowly curl into a smile again."Ah, of course I remember. The moment I heard you play you were in."
"Good. Now turn back to our topic." He had to,"we're still gonna finnish the tour in Europa, we’ll be back in England again before Christmas and then it will be the end. What are you gonna do with the crew? " This is business, he reminded himself.
"To be honest, I haven't had a real plan yet. But you're right, I should think about it." Robert was silent for a short moment, "Jimmy and I......we talked about doing the MTV project, we might go to Morocco for a while and see what we can do. But no details."
"Ah, I don't doubt that you two haven't had the time to discuss about the details," Kevin laughed when Robert gave him a confused glance, he said in a lower voice,"thinking about you two didn't come out of the room for almost two days after our gig in New York."
Robert blushed a deep red, but his next move totally surprised the guitarist. Their heads were drawn together til their forheads touched, Robert closed his eyes and whispered:"Tell me Kevin, tell me I'm not blinded by passion, tell me I'm not making the biggest mistake..."
MacMichael put a cool hand on the singer's cheek.
"You're frightened. Why?"
"At the moment it seems too good to be true."
"Don't you love him?"
"I love him more than my words can say."
"Then what makes you feel unsure?"
Robert turned silent, just sighed and moved his head to the guitarist's shoulder. Kevin patted his back lightly like people would do to a child.
*a big child he is, never hesitates to look for comfort when someone he trusts is around, but always wants to be strong in the public eyes*
"You're not doubting his love for you, are you?" his fingers went through the golden curls *how many more times would I still be able to do this?*,"you should see the way he looked at you when he first came to the backstage in Boston while you were singing." *and the way he looked at me as if his eyes would burn me up into ashes* "you are both dying to approach each other again. You didn't make the album without some thoughts, did you?"
Robert drew back from his embrace, mouthed a soundless "what?"
"Ah, don't fool around you silly. I'm the one played on Calling To You, if you don't remember. You didn't put the Oh Jimmy scream there without knowing he would hear that. You know he would listen to it, to every song, every word and every unit you were singing."
*and it went the same for you, you listened to Coverdale/Page again and again no matter how much you dislike your doppelganger*
"If this is a mistake? I don't know, I can't tell it for you. Just follow your heart, if your heart tells you to go for it, then it's right."
He watched the singer sinking in his own thoughts, slowly leaning to his right on the airplane window, til he turned again, there was something shining in his eyes, shone through the other's soul and caused a slight shiver:"Then tha's it. Thanks Kevin. And after all I think it's a bit late to flee now, he won't let me."
The guitarist rolled his eyes:"Poor Jimmy, how will he manage to go through the last half month in Japan. Ok then, let's cheer," he opened his bottle of beer which was no longer cool,"I guess we shall leave most of the things up to the managers. Now wish me back when I wish you a happy future!"
*though it does hurt a bit to think I won't be a part of your future.*
