...they're always in the back of my brain, and I bought two books tonight dealing with them.
They're part of the reason I love Twin Peaks, they've been in my nightmares since I was a child, and I'm drawn to horror movies about them moreso than the traditional sorts of "monsters".
I go clubbing with vampires...fangs don't freak me out or turn me on..it's no different than someone who doesn't play any sports but wears baseball caps...fashion/lifestyle, 'sall good.
Serial killers are much more scary, because they're real....which makes them great horror fodder.
I don't like them, but I do find them interesting, and growing up in the Northwest, they're always just around the corner...as well as people who are one small snapping point away from being a serial killer.
When I was a kid, I may have been one of the latter at a few points, but I have a conscience, and got a grip.
The first one I remember hearing about was "The I-5 Bandit", back in the 70s. He's now known as
"The I-5 Killer"...and when I first became aware of him, the police sketch(which didn't look much like the Wiki pic) made it hard for me to sleep.
Later, there was the Green River Killer....Gary Ridgway, who got away with it for over 20 years. The idea of bodies rotting in a river gave me some hefty nightmares....and the fact that it was the "Green" River didn't help.
Then there was Ted Bundy...who was assumed to be the Green River Killer for awhile...and worked with Ann Rule at one point on a suicide prevention hotline(!!), whose recent book about Ridgway I just got tonight.
Then there was the disappearance of Kim Kersey, which I've ranted about before because her little sister dated a friend of mine.
...the Forest Park Killer...
...the Pig Farm in Vancouver BC..
That creepy serial rapist I worked with as a telemarketer...
That guy I was friends with that molested and tried to kill a 5 year old girl...
There's a bunch of them here.
Where am I going with this?
I dunno, I think I'm just wondering what's in the water?
And why did it take all these years for me to get an Ann Rule book?
It seems like everyone in Washington has read at least 2, but I just got my first one.
I hope she's not a bad writer.
... it seems Gary Ridgway lived not far from her, and attended many of her book signings.
That's scary...what are the odds?
Only in the Northwest....
