Darren Aronofsky, Martin Scorsese, Terry Gilliam, David Lynch and Alfonso Cuaron, among others,
don't think that drugging and raping a child means you shouldn't flee the country to avoid punishment. Because it's been a really long time? Because his victim doesn't want the media circus surrounding her again (reasonable on her part, but not a reason to let him remain free)? Because he made some well-regarded movies? Because "film festivals the world over have always permitted works to be shown and for filmmakers to present them freely and safely, even when certain States opposed this"? (I wasn't aware film-festival organizers were capable of declaring international neutral zones.) Because he wasn't able to pick up his Oscar in person, the poor dear, so hasn't he suffered enough? Perhaps the people signing that petition need
a (really explicit) reminder.
(So far on the celebrity "rape should be punished" bandwagon:
Greg Grunberg and, of all people,
Kevin Smith. For whatever that's worth.)
Seriously, the various defenders of this guy are a little mystifying to me. Man rapes child, man flees to Europe, man is eventually apprehended; on that level it's not incredibly complicated.
