Last week

Since it has beeen so long since I last posted here, I should thank everyone who came to Invocation for my belated birthday celebration last month. The chocolate pirate ship cake that Emily made was very enjoyable, I think everyone who tried it would agree! :)

Anyway, last Monday I went to see some bands at the Electric Ballroom. Got there in time for the opening act Ava Inferi, a nice mixture of operatic and doom metal featuring the former guitarist from Mayhem. I liked them but they didn't get much reception from the crowd in general, who were mainly there for the following band The 69 Eyes. I actually enjoyed them a lot more than when I previously saw them at M'era Luna 2005. They were entertaining and energetic, and did an amusing cover of the Doors "LA Woman". Many of the audience then departed before the headliner Tiamat entered the stage. I didn't know too much about their new material but really liked the "Wildhoney" album that they recorded in the 90s. The show was slow and intense. It took a couple of songs to adjust to them, but the set was enjoyable and I stayed until the end.

The rest of the week was fairly quiet, though we did drive out to Kent last Saturday to visit Down House where Charles Darwin lived for 40 years. The exhibits were very interesting and it was nice walking around the gardens and eating cake in the cafe too.

This coming weekend, I'll be trying out two club nights that I have never been to before, though the venues where they are held are much more familiar. Tomorrow night I'll be at Electric Dreams at the Purple Turtle to celebrate jonny_eol's birthday and on Saturday I'll finally get to Reptile at the Minories. I missed it last month because I was in Brussels.
