Yeah, I was gonna drop the "THEY'RE FINALLY DOING BODYSWAP AND IT'S NOT THE BOYS!!!, but then I read your reaction post and saw that you hadn't seen the preview, so I refrained. But yeah, disappointing, and the opening scene would have been funnier if we hadn't known.
I am Not At All Happy about Dean being handed the Idiot Ball, yet again, this episode. We have established canon multiple times over that he knows Sam backwards and forwards, with the exception being his demon-blood drinking activities under Ruby's guidance while Dean was dead. There is NO WAY it would have taken Dean that long to catch on, not with the number of anvilicious hints that were shoved in the audience's faces, and gee, d'ya think he might have noticed ALL OF HIS PHONES WERE MISSING over the course of those 36+ hours? Oi. I was hoping for something about the bodyswap mojo to occlude the perceptions of those near and dear to the target, giving an established reason for Dean to not catch on, but that was obviously hoping for too much, ah well.
Yeah, though, I meeped when it occurred to me that Sam was no longer shielded from angelic perceptions by the Enochian sigils...because Gary's ribcage doesn't have them. Of course, it turned out that was a moot point, since it's actually only Sam's meatsuit Lucifer wants...we have canon it's the body that counts, vesselhood being passed through bloodlines, so if Castiel can wear Claire just as easily as Jimmy, Lucifer can wear Sam Winchester's body if the intellect inside it agrees to possession, even if it isn't the intellect that belongs there. Scary.
And ooooooooo, I like the idea that this spell will end up relevant to the resolution of vessel issues later in the season. There's often some small-ish thing from a "filler" ep earlier in the season that ends up relevant to the endgame...this could well be part of that for this season, awesome! And who knows what else is in that book; the boys certainly ought to be turning it over to Bobby.
(Speaking of which, when he couldn't get a hold of Dean, why didn't Sam call Bobby instead? Heh.)
I agree with this completely. It took 45 minutes of the episode for Dean to realize that it really wasn't Sam. And like Dean wouldn't have noticed the phones missing. That annoyed me the most about the episode.
