3-11 Day was very special, for I, as well as others, made this holiday mean something even without 311 having a concert or fan bash, like last year's festivities. I simply hung out with friends, who all were very kind to my 311 obsession, wishing me Happy 3-11 Day many times, even to the point of wearing signs saying "Happy 3-11 Day" at work. I got tons of IMs/text messages/myspace replies/phone calls/even a live journal dedication simply acknowledging that it's 3-11 day, a day that represents a band that means so much to me. 3-11 Day is better than my freaking birthday, so much love by all the fans and the band was spread throughout all forms of communication. Of course, it could be viewed as just another day, but this band that connects so many people in a positive way, and have caused their fans to really embrace this one day of the year and simply celebrate the power of music and friendship in their lives. I wake up every morning thinking how I could make each day become an amazing memory in my life and yesterday proved to simply be a special day due to my drive to make something even more of it. Nothing insanely amazing went down, but that doesn't matter. All the simple 3-11 Day wishes made the day special.
In honor of 3-11 Day, the band asked fans to send in questions via email so they could provide answers in a video interview. Of course I sent 9 different questions by 3 different email addresses, haha, and well.......one of my questions was asked!! I made the name "Marguerite Shins from New Orleans, LA" (named after a good friend and because I saw something about the Shins right before I made the name) and asked:
"Have any other instruments, besides drums/bass/guitar,
been recorded for the new album? (Such as mandolins
heard on Sometimes Jacks Rule the Realm)"
The question was asked to Nick Hexum, lead singer, and he answered in a nice amount of detail citing that the new album may have piano, keyboard, synths, even possible horn sections, such as saxaphone. I CAN'T WAIT for the new album. I think they are creating some really different stuff.
I could go on and on about how much 311 has meant to me throughout my life, especially my high school years, but I'll say a few simple things. I love them very much and yes, they are just a band, but a band in which I found meaning in and pulled something very positive out of. One song can mean nothing to someone, yet uplift the next person out of their horrible day. We give meaning to all art in life and I think it's great to really LOVE certain things that can't ever fade away. Listening to 311 is like looking at a scrapbook of my life, and I can't thank them and myself enough for creating such a bond with the beautiful art of music. Thanks to everyone who has been kind to me this year and all years past. Peace
