My choice this week was thrust upon me when I heard that Trish Keenan from Broadcast had died suddenly. I like Broadcast a lot. I think I first heard Come on Let's Go shortly after moving back to the UK from the US in 2000, and I had to spend quite a bit of time driving between my parents' place and Harrow... Driving in London meant I listened to XMF a bit, and that song was on a lot, and I really liked it. I then liked the album and the other albums of theirs I got. I perhaps have not kept up with them in the last couple of years, but they still make it to #4 on my
last.fm profile of all songs played.
When I heard the news, I checked to realise that they had one newish collaborative album that I did not have, and sought it from the record shop (the owner is called Howard and is indeed the drummer from the Vapours). I picked it up and the owner saw it and immediately talked about the news... I bought the record and have listened to it a few times over the last week. I don't think I've given it the attention that I should, since it's a little, well, difficult, I suppose. Even less song-based than their usual stuff, but bits of beauty kept grabbing my attention when it wandered off. It's either something that deserves listening to with rapt attention and closed eyes, or maybe how I did, with it as a constant background, until it seems normal. Parts of it sounded (in a good way) that they could pass as the incidental bits in the White Album, and others sounded more like Broadcast's usual ascetic yet catchy electronica. I will certainly listen again.
