Rachel was trying not to listen to Finn and Quinn’s deeply personal conversation going on in the next room.
She couldn’t help the fact that Quinn’s parents chose walls that held excellent acoustics. Quinn was accepted to a college out of state, and she had emailed Finn with a message saying there was something she had wanted to tell Finn.
Finn, being Finn, had stopped being dishonest with Rachel.
Also, he accidently forwarded the message to her as well when replying. Having seen the message, Rachel knew Finn wasn’t planning on being a two-timer. He wasn’t planning on it.
She knew that Finn loved her. But he had a tendency to get caught up in the moment, something she respected and understood. So, she decided to go with him to meet Quinn, and this was how she was sitting at the top of the Fabray’s stairway, not listening to any conversation going on.
She looked outside, focusing on what a bright day it was. She focused on the house across the way, critiquing certain things while Finn and Quinn continued to murmur under their breath.
Then there was silence.
It really was a beautiful day, the kind of day that gives anyone a song in their heart. She admired the trees, the sidewalk, Puck’s truck pulling up in the driveway…
Rachel snapped to attention.
Puck stepped out of his truck and looked at Finn’s car. He ran a hand over the top of his head and seemed frustrated by the lack of mohawk. He glowered up at the house, standing completely still for a moment.
Now, it was Rachel’s keen sense for drama that made her realize what was about to happen. Puck was laboring under a misconception. Old boyfriend’s car in the driveway. A standard dramatic tool in teenage dramas…
She hurried to Quinn’s door and forgot to knock before she came in. “Noah’s…back.”
Finn and Quinn broke away from their hug. Quinn wiped her eyes but she didn’t look down. She met Rachel’s gaze evenly, and Rachel had to admire that quality.
“Noah’s home. We should meet him downstairs, Finn,” Rachel said. You see, she was willing to not judge by appearances. Rachel thought her quality of being open-minded was of better merit than Quinn’s ability to meet people’s eyes when she shouldn’t be able to.
“Right, yeah,” Finn said, grateful.
“I told him I wasn’t going to be home today,” Quinn said. “He’s going to think something happened, and we were moving tomorrow. Doubt that will happen now. You know him.”
Finn’s face fell. He had just gained back his friendship with Puck, and Rachel knew how much that meant to Finn.
“I’ll distract him,” Rachel offered. “I’ll say I borrowed Finn’s car after I heard you…got sick.”
She couldn’t stop herself from offering to help. She couldn’t. Quinn looked thankful, now, but she took the offer too quickly, ushering Finn down the hall and down the back stairway.
Rachel smoothed down her skirt, ready for her performance. Her breathing was unsteady, and she was almost hurt (but nothing happened).
Puck opened the door, putting down his workout bag softly by the door. He was trying to be clever and quiet.
“Puck!” Rachel yelled from the top step, clapping her hands together.
He jumped a foot in the air. Rachel took this as a good sign of her acting ability.
“Berry. You almost killed me,” Puck said. “Wait. Did you break in?”
“Why would I commit a felony?” Rachel asked.
“Quinn wouldn’t ask you over,” Puck said, honestly. He was right about that much.
“Actually, I was in the process of nursing her back to health.”
“She’s sick?” Now he seemed upset.
“She was very ill, but I happen to know remedies even experts can’t quite master. Breathing exercises can be used for many things.”
He looked into the kitchen, and she thought she saw him do a double-take. She hoped Finn had taken his jacket off the chair. But then Noah started up the stairs towards her, and she guessed she had imagined it.
“Thank you, that’s really cool of you,” Puck said, and he seemed to look at her differently. In just an instant, Rachel felt pinned to the spot.
She realized then, that Puck was always in danger of losing so much. It seemed to be his life theme.
“We should wait for Quinn,” she said, and he motioned to the bedroom.
Rachel sat on the bed and looked at him from the corner of her eyes. He stood in the bedroom window, running a hand over his head again.
“You may sit besides me,” Rachel said, thinking that anyone sneaking to the car would be spotted. She patted the covers to encourage him. He did, and she was soon hyper aware of how close he was.
They waited, there, in the hot bedroom surrounded by Quinn’s smiling face out of different picture frames. She knew, somehow, that he was feeling twisted inside.
“She’s very lucky to have you,” Rachel said softly. He snorted under his breath.
“Yeah right.”
She couldn’t abide by an unjustified lack of confidence.
“She is,” Rachel said firmly, lifting his chin up. “I’m right, you know.”
His eyes met hers, and inside, she shuddered but held his gaze. “I’m right,” she repeated. Downstairs, there was a sound of a chair scraping across the floor tiles, and it was like a bad note jolting through her spine.
She held his chin, jerking a little, her fingers moving in surprise, but he didn’t acknowledge the noise. She moved forward, to do her…her job. Her part. To distract, to let Finn get away.
Puck met her halfway in the middle, and his lips were on hers. He tasted like boy and stale beer, and somehow this was okay.
She kissed him back, because of her part. This was a very good distraction, and she’d pull away in a minute and act properly horrified.
She just had to make sure Finn was out of the house. Had to give him time.
So, she kissed Puck back and when he kissed her along her neck, her breath caught and she laid back. Puck was feeling terrible, she could tell it in his kisses and how his breathing was labored. How his eyes were glistening with anger rather than sadness.
She also didn’t mind being held. She could let him hold her.
With all distraction in mind, she let him kiss her collarbone, let him peel the cardigan off her body. Somehow, her breathing became less needing to be faked. She ran a hand along his arms, admiring his dedication to-
“Rachel. Is this okay?” he asked. Harshly, angrily, but he was going to ask. “Because I’m a stud but I’m not that kind of guy.”
She felt like her eyes were wet. She was a really good actress.
Rachel nodded, and therefore was committed. “I’m well-prepared, I’ve taken the proper…”
He kissed her again, and she got lost in the sensation. She held him tightly until he moved her arms up and kissed her nipple. The shock of the sensation made her gasp in surprise.
”I am good, huh?”
All she knew was that she didn’t want him to stop.
“No more talking,” Rachel ordered him, and he laughed and pressed against her, letting her feel him through his jeans. Her head spun over the fact that she was causing that…from him.
She grabbed his shoulders, and pushed against him, and he gasped and then smirked at her, looking at her with entirely different eyes now.
Under the sound of the covers and his shoes and jeans hitting the floor, Rachel thought she heard the crack of the door moving, a footstep on the landing. Puck’s jaw tightened. So she wasn’t imagining it.
Someone was looking at her. Judging by the lightness of the footsteps, it had to be Quinn.
She knew it was Quinn.
And at that thought, her whole body went hot. Rachel wanted her to see, how far she was willing-
Puck pressed her into the covers again, arranging her legs. She should say no, but instead she pulled at his shoulders again, trying to align herself.
It hurt when he pushed inside of her. At first, it was an awkward fumbling but Puck was good. He pushed slowly, watching her face, and she moaned, shocked at the feeling.
”Keep going,” she breathed. Get this frustration and hurt out of her.
The friction began to get better. It wasn’t perfect. But they were together as a team, supporting each other and holding each other and touching each other.
Underneath the pleasure and the thrill, it was happiness at being with someone.
Just when she was getting pleasure, he came, and his arms went weak. They laid there connected, and she touched his face.
He looked towards the door, and they both knew how they had…overacted. Ruined the state of things.
“I’ve got to go,” he said after awhile. “I just took off work to surprise her.”
“Stay a little bit longer.”
Like always, Puck surprised her. He actually did stay and ran his hand through her hair. They were partners in this mess now. Judging by the sound of Finn’s car tearing out of the driveway…she knew how it felt being on this side of the mess.
It was illuminating. She knew he’d stay until she got dressed as well. Rachel did not know what would happen when she got out of this bed. She didn’t know in what way Puck would be beside her, if it would even be in the form of a friend.
But he would be beside her.
For now, they laid there until the sun set.
