Title: But A Summer’s Day Couldn’t Compare to You

Author: Jakia

Prompt: AU Bingo-Turn of the Century

A/N: I know most people read “Turn of the Century” and think steampunk 1890s-1910s, but I am a Shakespeare scholar at the core, and his works definitely count as turn of the century (1590-1610s).  So.  Shakespeare fic.  Yes.

Any direct quotes are taken from opensourceshakespeare.org.  Excellent resource, I highly recommend it.

Plays quoted: Romeo and Juliet, Merchant of Venice, Much Ado About Nothing, Macbeth, and Hamlet.  Some quotes have been altered slightly to fit the piece (her changed to him, ect.) or the language has been changed only slightly for better understanding with modern audiences.  If a full line is in italics, then it’s a direct quote from the Bard’s work, usually from the work mentioned in the head, though there is an annotation* if otherwise.  The title comes from Shakespeare sonnet #18 *

Also note! This fic uses footnotes!  Whenever you see a *, if you hover over it with your mouse, some extra information will be available for you to explanations things going on in the fic.  If you have a basic understanding of Shakespeare, then the footnotes aren’t really necessary, and are more there to provide some humorous background information.  If you aren’t familiar with Shakespeare at all, then please, please read the footnotes, because otherwise you aren’t going to get much out of this fic.

Another warning-or rather, an explanation.  I spent my senior year of college studying almost exclusively Shakespeare, his life, his plays, and the Elizabethan theatre as a whole.  I wouldn’t say I’m an expert by any stretch of the imagination, but I have done a lot of research on the subject.  Any factual errors you find are entirely my fault.

Many, many thanks to my beta, buckeyegrrl for beta-ing for me!  You are a life saver!  Also special thanks goes to clonechild for teaching me how to do the footnotes!  You guys rock!
