More 'Glee' ahead for Canuck actors Jessalyn Gilsig and Cory Monteith

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. - Executive producer Ryan Murphy has good news for the Canadians in the cast of “Glee.”

Storylines for Cory Monteith (Finn) and Jessalyn Gilsig (Terri) are heating up as the high school musical sensation - last week named outstanding show of the year by television critics at their annual awards - heads into a second season.

Gilsig’s character, who last season split with hubby and glee club coach Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison), seemed to be out of the mix.

“Jessalyn’s character is coming back,” says Murphy.

Look for the character to re-emerge this fall as Terri decides to get back at Will by hooking up with somebody “who will make him incredibly jealous.”

This was news to Gilsig who was among several “Glee” cast members at Fox’s press tour party Monday at the Santa Monica pier.

“You know more than I do,” she says.

The cast is just returning from a short summer hiatus.

Monteith says he’s been told the on-again, off-again relationship between high school sweethearts Finn and Rachel (Lea Michele) is back on, “although theirs is a complicated relationship,” he says.

Murphy was surrounded by critics this week at the Fox portion of the annual summer TV press tour. He says the emphasis will shift back to the core characters as the series moves forward, with plans to cut back on musical numbers and put more focus on story.

Not that the parade of big names will stop on “Glee.” The busy writer/producer, whose new Julia Roberts feature “Eat, Pray, Love,” hits theatres Aug. 13, did confirm that Roberts’ co-star Javier Bardem will guest as “some sort of rock star substitute teacher.”

Murphy isn’t surprised that Bardem wants to sing and dance on TV, noting: “He’s such a ham.”

The second episode of the season will feature the music of Britney Spears.

“It was her idea,” says Murphy. “I just think she loves what the show is about - paying tribute to pop culture in a very loving and respectful way.”

After chart-topping remakes of songs by Madonna, Journey and Olivia Newton John, Murphy is hearing from many musicians eager to get their tunes on the “Glee” playlist.

Murphy says he was blown away recently when a package arrived from Paul McCartney, suggesting, in a hand-written note, that Beatles standards like “Michelle” be used on the show.

A major artist - not McCartney and not Michael Jackson - will be featured on the “Glee” episode scheduled to follow Fox’s broadcast of the Super Bowl this season. While that is still being negotiated, Murphy says a deal is in place to work Internet sensation Susan Boyle into a Christmas episode.

Boyle will play a character seeking a makeover.

“I don’t think I’m going to give her monologues and arias,” Murphy says when asked if Boyle can act, “but I think she represents what the show represents.”

Murphy dropped several other hints about the coming season. There will be a “Rocky Horror Picture Show” episode, with the cast dressed up as characters from the cult feature. Kristin Chenoweth will return as former glee clubber April Rhodes in another song-filled showcase.

Look for more screen time for Heather Morris as clueless Cheerio Brittany (especially in the Britney Spears episode, the second one back this fall). The former Beyonce backup dancer and “So You Think You Can Dance” contestant gets better on the series every week says Murphy, who finds her “natural and funny.”

The big breakout comedy star of the first season, Jane Lynch as nasty cheerleader coach Sue Sylvester, will be even meaner in the second season, says Murphy. The character wasn’t even part of the show, critics learned this week, until Fox entertainment president Kevin Reilly suggested that the show needed a villain. Lynch is nominated for an Emmy, and quickly shot down Murphy’s press tour suggestion that the entire cast attend the award show dressed in Sue Sylvester track suits.

“That’s not going to happen,” says Lynch.

Murphy says previously announced plans to add new students to the series through a nation-wide talent search are still on but will not impact the cast until the third season. (Fox has already renewed “Glee” through 2011-12.)

He also let it slip that Fox executives - tight lipped this press tour on plans to do a major overhaul on “American Idol” - have approached him to be a judge.

“Yes they did actually,” he said when asked. “I cannot comment on that.”

“Glee” will be down one Canadian when it returns next season: Patrick Gallagher.

The Edmonton native was hilarious as cranky football coach Ken Tanaka and the character does get one, last spectacular moment, according to Monteith, who says: “You don’t want to miss it.”

LOL @ Ryan Murphy suggesting them to wear Sue's tracksuits to the Emmys, are you crazy!? :P and I wonder if he'll take up the American Idol judge offer.

and so now we know that the Super Bowl episode isn't tributing Michael Jackson and that Ken Tanaka is leaving :(
