On the day of the show, the first two rows in the auditorium were roped off for the show’s participants so that they could easily slip backstage to prepare when the act before them went on. Wes and Jeff were the second act on, so they started off backstage and ended up grabbing the seats to Nick’s right after they were done.
Some of the acts were surprisingly good, like the brunette girl from Blaine’s math class who sang something he recognized as being from Les Mis, but others were absolutely dismal. One guy with a Mohawk - Blaine vaguely recalled that he had been among that group of jocks at the dumpster after Christmas - started in on an acoustic guitar cover of Closer by Nine Inch Nails that was actually kind of decent. After about forty-five seconds, someone cut his mic off and turned the lights down on him while the cheerleading coach got up and literally dragged him off stage.
The auditorium broke into nervous giggling and whispered exclamations of shock, confusion, and amusement. There were even a few wolf whistles. Jeff whispered something to Wes, who shared it with Nick, who in turn leaned over to Blaine and muttered, “Apparently he auditioned with, like, a Disney song or something.”
Once the excitement died down and the lights were brought back up, the show continued. He watched Kurt get up and make his way backstage after a few minutes, and he really tried not to focus on the knee-high boots he was wearing.
He turned his attention to the stage, where a girl was juggling (attempting to juggle, Blaine thought) bowling pins. After the fourth time they landed on the wooden stage - one even rolled down off the edge into the pit - Nick tugged at his arm. “Let’s go!”
Blaine let himself be led backstage, and by the time they got there, Kurt was standing center stage, a lone spotlight on him while he grabbed the microphone out of its stand. Blaine wasn’t sure what he was expecting, but it definitely wasn’t the sound of that voice as he began to sing Mr. Cellophane.
Kurt could sing.
His eyes roamed over the performer’s body while he danced around the stage. His senses were overloaded - he looked gorgeous in those pants and those boots and that shirt and that vest, but his voice was gorgeous and the words making their way into his ears were almost haunting in their emotion.
Blaine swallowed, and Nick grabbed his shoulders to turn him away from his view of the stage.
“What-“
“Concentrate, Blaine. I can’t have you lost in thoughts of his ass when we’re out there.”
Blaine tried to fight down the redness he knew was trying to stain his cheeks. “I’m not looking at his ass.”
Nick simply raised an eyebrow. Blaine let his eyes flicker back to the stage, and Nick sighed in resignation.
All too soon, Kurt was finished singing, and it was their turn to go on. Blaine watched as Kurt returned to his seat in the front row, and it barely registered that they had made their way on stage and he was already sitting at the piano and Nick was looking at him expectantly.
Blaine swallowed again and nodded once at Nick. He turned his eyes to the music in front of him, and he managed to keep them there the entire performance, despite the temptation to seek out Kurt’s face in the audience.
