By the time Rachel returns from shopping, hands full of paper bags and shouting out, "is everyone decent?" with her eyes closed, Blaine and Kurt are snuggled up on the couch. There's something on TV, the news or a game show maybe, but all Blaine can focus on is Kurt's fingers running through his hair. It feels perfect, like he belongs here, and he snuggles down a little further into Kurt's lap.
"Ha ha, Rachel. Very funny," Kurt calls out. He bends down to whisper into Blaine's ear, "time to get up, I have to help Rachel with dinner." Blaine reluctantly lifts his head and watches as Kurt stands, watches the way his back and shoulders contort when he stretches his arms over his head.
Kurt and Rachel move around the kitchen without needing to say anything. When Kurt pulls a head of lettuce out of one of the bags, Rachel is already getting him a cutting board. She doesn't need to ask Kurt to get her the roasting pan from the top shelf in a cupboard that she can't reach, he's already pulling it down for her. They move around seamlessly, Kurt filling a pot with water to boil Rachel's pasta, Rachel chopping up pieces of bell pepper for Kurt's salad.
Blaine feels completely awkward and left out, sitting on the couch while the two of them prepare dinner. The jealousy that's been gnawing at the bottom of his stomach starts to bubble up. They look so happy together and it's not that Blaine's jealous that Kurt's happy, he wants to Kurt to be happy. He's jealous that Kurt's happy without him, that Kurt is now comfortable around someone else the way he'd only been comfortable around Blaine. He knows it's childish and immature, which just makes it worse, so he just keeps his mouth shut.
When he hears Rachel tell an inside joke between the two of them and sees Kurt ruffle her hair, it's like his body is an auto-pilot. He gets up and walks over to the kitchen, slips an arm around Kurt's waist and tugs him close until they're sharing the same body space.
"Can I help you guys with anything?" Blaine asks. The kitchen is the perfect size for the two of them, just Rachel and Kurt, and Blaine can tell immediately that he's in the way.
Kurt smiles and scoots a little closer, dinner temporarily forgotten. "You're our guest, Blaine. I'm not going to put you to work."
"But I don't mind helping," Blaine insists. He actually doesn't know much about cooking, his mom always makes his meals, but he just needs to be closer to Kurt, to be a part of Kurt's new life, even if it's in such a small way.
"Don't be silly, go have a seat. We'll have this in the oven in a minute," Kurt says as he brushes his lips against Blaine's cheek. Blaine turns his head quickly, forcing their lips to meet, and really kisses him. He tells himself that it's only because he's misses Kurt and not because Rachel is less than a foot away. Kurt makes a surprised noise in the back of his throat, but doesn't pull away. They continue kissing, Blaine using his teeth to lightly tug on Kurt's bottom lip, until they hear Rachel let out a high pitched laugh.
"I've missed how adorable you two are," she says, her hands on her cheeks. Blaine pulls away from the kiss, embarrassed and a little guilty, and Kurt just rolls his eyes.
