The walk from the bus station to the subway isn't very far, but Kurt holds Blaine's hand the entire time. Blaine knows he should be paying attention to his surroundings, taking in the architecture and the people, the amazing things he's only ever read about, but his eyes stay on Kurt the entire time. It amazes him how Kurt navigates the crowded streets, politely pushing past tourists that are walking too slowly, his body twisting and turning to move between them. He tugs Blaine's hand and Blaine goes willingly.
Kurt leads him down the stairs and into the subway, Rachel following close behind them. It's warmer than outside, the air heavy and stale underground. Kurt points over at something that reminds Blaine of an ATM and tells him, "you need a MetroCard to use the subway." Blaine nods and walks over, taking a credit card out of his wallet. He follows the prompts on the screen, but doesn't make it very far. Does he need a card for the buses too, or just the subway? How many rides is he going to need while he's visiting? He doesn't know New York at all, doesn't know how far away Rachel and Kurt's apartment is from anything. He's lost, staring at the screen until the white words morph into blobs. His shoulders drop and he thinks about how Kurt goes to school here, lives here, and how he can't even manage to figure out fare for the subway.
The screen suddenly changes, a hand covered with fingerless gloves effortlessly pressing the buttons. Kurt smiles over at him and takes the credit card from Blaine's hands and swipes it, a yellow and black MetroCard popping out moments later. He hands both cards back to Blaine.
"Sorry, this is all second nature to me at this point," Kurt explains, but Blaine finds it amazing that Kurt is so comfortable, even with such a mundane task as this, has such a grip on his life here. Kurt is happy and growing up and Blaine loves it because he knows Kurt loves it. He thanks Kurt and tucks his credit card back in his wallet.
"Don't you and Rachel need to buy one?" he asks, but Kurt is already putting his wallet away.
"Nope, ours have unlimited fares. Now come on, we don't want to miss the train." Blaine watches closely and mimics Kurt and Rachel as they slide their cards through. He breathes out a sigh of relief when the doors slide open on the first try.
The ride on the subway is crowded, Blaine and Rachel sitting on either side of Kurt. They're talking excitedly about about all the places they're going to take Blaine and Blaine should be happy, he knows he should be. But all he notices is the way Rachel has her foot hooked around Kurt's ankle and how Kurt squeezes high up on Rachel's thigh every time they agree on an especially fabulous place to bring Blaine.
"We have to take him to our coffee shop!"
"And our favorite spot in Central Park!"
"Oh, and that awesome vintage clothing store we love!"
Blaine can't help but notice all the we's and our's leaving Kurt and Rachel's mouths and it leaves him with a weird feeling deep down in his stomach. He knows he shouldn't be jealous, knows that it's a good thing for Kurt and Rachel to have each other here. But he can't stop the little waves of jealousy that hit every time Rachel and Kurt finish each others sentences.
