As Burt was thinking all this he came to a sudden realization.
Kurt needs a hospital.
Fumbling for his phone Burt hastily dials Carole’s work number.
He’s put through to the nurse’s station and then put on hold.
“Burt? Is everything alright? You don’t usually call me while I’m at work.”
Burt’s never been so glad to hear his wife’s voice, she grounds him and right now he needs that, needs someone who can keep a level head.
“Carole,” His voice is hoarse, he’s trying to hold back tears. “Carole it, it’s Kurt.” He hears her take a deep breath before she responds.
“Did something happen Burt? Is Kurt alright?”
“No, no he’s-he’s not alright. Carole I-I need to bring him to the hospital.”
“Is he hurt? Do you need an ambulance?” He can tell Carole’s struggling to stay calm.
“No, Carole I think - no I’m positive that Kurt was, Kurt he- he was-” Burt can’t help the sob that comes forth. Thinking it is hard enough, saying it, actually saying the word rape somehow made it all the more real.
“Burt?” Carole questions quietly and Burt knows he needs to just say it.
“Kurt was, Kurt was raped.” He finally manages to get out, the last word barely above a whisper. The line goes silent, and he scrambles to fill in the silence. “While he was in prison, I think- I’m pretty sure he was and I didn’t know what to do or, or who to call and I just I’m bringing him in but I need you to be there, I don’t know what’s going to happen and Kurt won’t say anything and I just-”
“Burt, I’m here, bring him and I’ll be here for you, okay?” He can tell she’s crying by the way she talks, the way her voice trembles. He nods before he remembers that she can’t see him and responds in the affirmative before hanging up the phone.
The drive to the hospital doesn’t help, Kurt still hasn’t said anything and it hurts Burt to look at his eyes. They look dead, like Kurt isn’t even in there. Maybe he isn’t.
Burt can’t stop thinking either, he wishes he could, wishes he could just focus on the drive and forget. Forget that he let Kurt down, that he let them take his child away and put him in a place filled with real monsters. What if Kurt’s sick? What if he caught something from whomever it was that defiled him - what if he’s dying?
Burt glances at Kurt when they hit a red light, really looks at him. He’s pale, was he always so pale?
Burt can’t remember.
The light goes green and Burt forces himself to focus on the road instead of the thoughts swirling around in his head.
He’d find out the answers to everything soon enough.
