When Kurt finally went back to school, the comment his Uncle had made was still bothering him. He wasn't really sure what the word fag meant, but from what his Uncle said, it was a very bad thing. He'd already thought about asking his dad, but whenever he'd went to him in the past about bad things, like being pushed over or teased at school, his dad had always been very angry. He hated it when his dad was mad.

He couldn't even ask his mum.

Even though he was definately not in the mood to deal with his classmates, who had either openly stared at him, or whispered to each other about him. But he needed to know. And although Noah Puckerman was really annoying and dumb, he'd probably know. He was the one who'd first learnt the truth about where babies came from and then told all the boys in his class.

During lunch break, Noah was sitting in his usual spot with a group of his friends.

"What are you doing here?" One of them said. "Just cause your mum's dead doesn't mean you can sit with us."

"Shut up, stupid," Noah said. He nodded at Kurt. "What do you want?"
"I need to ask you a question," Kurt said. "It's really important.Do you... um, do you know what a fag is?"

"I do," David Karofsky said. "My mum is always telling me about them."

Everyone turned to look at Dave, and he puffed up, proud that he knew about something and the others didn't.

"She says that they're freaks of nature," he said. "Girly, fairy boys." The grin on his face turned nasty and he pointed at Kurt. "Like you. She told me to stay away from, cause I could catch it from you, and she says there's no way she's gonna have a gay for a son."

Kurt took a step away from the group of boys. "Thanks," he said hoarsely.

As soon as he was out of sight of them, Kurt broke into a run, tears streaming down his face. He ran over to a tree at the corner of the schoolyard and collapsed next to it, curling into himself as he sobbed.

I'm really enjoying this already, so please take this as the friendly constructive criticism it is, but uhm. I don't know if you're from the UK and that's why you're using 'mum' but nobody in America really does and certainly not little kids from small-town Ohio. They'd say 'mom'. I really like your story, but the Britishism was pulling me out of it.

I had the same thought. Nothing pulls me out of a story faster than American kids saying 'mum' or British kids saying 'mom'.

I really liked most of the story, but like you said, first Anon, the 'mum' kinda pulled me out of the story.

Author Anon, I'd recommend getting a beta who can britpick for you.

Oh god, sorry about that. Thankyou so much for pointing that out. I'll keep in mind that Kurt lives in America in future.

I didn't think I'd like this fic when I read the prompt but it blew me away. I just shudder to think of a child being put into the position Kurt was, so shortly after his mom's death. Very nice, want more badly.
