Ever since giving up Beth Puck has fallen into a depression but nobody seems to notice. After Will hands out his number Puck is at first reluctant to use it but after he hears Finn (or someone else) talk about how he helped them Puck decides to call him a few times but Will never picks up (up to author why don't really care).
So when it finally becomes to much (losing Beth, being abused by his mother, his father abandoning him, etc.) Puck decides to end his life.
Except he's not sure he really wants to die. So he calls the one person he knows is far enough away that he'll never make it to Puck in time should he figure out what's going on and, at the same time, he's the one person that could talk him out of this madness.
Puck calls Kurt.
