"Do you think she likes me or something?"

Finn looked up at me from the couch, where he was splayed out watching Storage Wars. "I don't know, man," he shrugged. "I really hope you didn't lead her on or anything because that's just ridiculous. We'll be gone in a few weeks."

"I know. Trust me, I didn't do anything. She just got this look, like she wanted to confess something."

Finn turned to the TV, purposely ignoring me. "Hey, maybe we should try something like that."

I turned to the screen in time to see the old man digging through some junk. "No way, he paid a thousand bucks for some cardboard boxes? I'd rather just go dumpster diving and keep the cash."

"Well, it's the best plan we've come up with so far." He still wasn't sure what he was doing next year... and neither was I. I didn't wanna think about it.

"Whatever," I muttered. "Look, can you just tell me what you think for a second?"

"About what? If Sugar likes you? Isn't she dating Rory... or Artie? I'm not really sure."

I shook my head. I should have known Finn wouldn't really be any use to me. He always had his head in the clouds... worrying about a thousand things at once but never on what seemed to really matter. "I know girls get these crazy ideas sometimes, but I just think it's weird... we've never really talked."

Finn just shrugged. "I don't know. Just be careful, dude. She's kind of innocent and like I said, we'll be out of there pretty soon. Don't do anything you'll regret."

"You sound like my dad." I slipped out before I realized just what I was saying. It was kind of a sore subject for both of us. "Never mind. I guess you're right. It's probably not worth my time."

Finn seemed distracted. "Do you think we'll turn out like our dads?"

"Where the hell did that come from?" I shot him a look. In all the years we've known each other, we'd never mentioned the one thing we have in common. Neither of us wanted to talk about our absent fathers. It was just something that never came up.

Finn shrugged. "I was just thinking about how your dad just showed up... and I found out what really happened to my dad. It's like we're doomed to fail."

"I'm not doomed to anything." I said harshly. "And neither are you. I know our dads didn't turn out like we pictured, but that doesn't mean we can't turn out good. I mean, we both kind of looked up to something we thought existed, so why can't we turn that into reality? I always thought my dad was a success... and I know I could be one too. We just have to get off our asses, stop coming up with stupid ideas and try something that might actually work." I clicked off the TV, trying to prove my point.

"You're right." Finn stood up, looking determined. I didn't like when he got that look, it usually meant he was gonna come up with some crazy, harebrained scheme.

I figured I should get out of there before it was too late. "Anyway, I should get to work. I've got a lot of time to make up since I gave my money away."

"OK, I'll see you later, man." I could practically see the gears in his head fast at work.
