[Fill] Have Faith in Me: 1b/1 shananagains April 11 2012, 09:58:54 UTC

It's when they get home from school and there is one of those lock boxes on the door, the glaring pink paper taped to it, and locks on all their windows that he knows they're in deep trouble. The glaring paper just says that their house has been seized, to call the toll free number for more information, and it's basically a glaring 'fuck you' in Noah's face.

"Noah what's going on?" Sarah asks tugging at his hand, and it's the first time she's seen her brother cry the loud gasping sobs that scare her in years. She holds him as best she can until they subside, and then Puck calls the number, he's loud and angry and spits out words that makes Sarah cringe. She prefers Noah, and not Puck, but sometimes Puck has to come out to get things done.

"They'll let us get out clothes and important things out tomorrow at noon." He tells her, and he still sounds so angry that it makes her want to cry.

"What are we going to do?" She asks, looking up at him with those big round eyes that make him feel even more shitty about the entire situation.

"Probably what we should have done in the first place." He tells her, picking her up weakly. The weeks of not eating properly are taking its toll, even Rachel Berry is asking him if he's got some sort of eating disorder.

It takes them half an hour to walk to the nice part of Lima, and ten minutes to remember what street they need to be on. When he gets to the front porch it take every last ounce of his self preservation and one long look at Sarah for him to remember why he's here and why they have to be. He won't let Sarah live on the street. If it was just him it wouldn't even be a question, he'd sleep in an alleyway before he'd ever beg Carole to let him stay with her, not after the way he'd thrown all those years back into her and Finn's faces.

When she answers the door, it takes one look and she's sweeping the pair of them in the house and into the kitchen. Suddenly there are hot steaming cups of chicken broth in front of them and then hot steaming mugs full of cloying tea to be drank as well. Noah sobs out the entire story, looking at his mug, refusing to make eye contact with Carole, and Mr. Hummel who had joined them at some point.

It slips before Noah can even remember that she's not his mom anymore, "I'm so sorry mom, I'm so sorry that I disappointed you, and I'm sorry that you have to pick up the pieces again, and I'm sorry that I was never a good son to you, Mom I'm so sorry." There's snot and tears and spit running down his face he's sobbing so hard and trying to curl in on himself, when he grabs his face gently and wipes it all away before she starts to talk.

"Noah Puckerman, you never stopped being my son. You've made bad choises and I didn't approve of them, especially when you ran Finn through them, but you were always my son to me. You've always been that little street rat that Finn brought home one day and declared that you were moving in because you were his new best friend. You have always been my son and I wished you had come to me sooner so I could have helped you." Her speech leaves them both crying fresh tears and Puck is gripping her sweat shirt so hard that it tears a little under the pressure.

Burt Hummel is a pretty cool guy Noah decides the next day when he takes the day off so he can help Noah pick up the parts of his life that are worthy of being carried over. He like how Mr. Hummel doesn't judge when he looks at the living room and the kerosene heater that is surrounded by a nest of blankets and pillow, just shrugs and says, "You did what you had too. Now, you get to relax and let someone take care of you."

They don't take much, there isn't much worth taking. Just their clothes, Sarah's stuffed bear patches, and the album has of Beth's baby pictures the ones that Shelby sends him like clockwork the first of every month.

Carole sets them up in the two guest bedrooms, and it's weird to not have Sarah burrowed into his side with her curly hair tickling his nose as he tries to pretend that the hunger pains aren't there. Sarah must think it's weird too because at around one in the morning she scuttles into his new room and climbs right into bed with him.

They wake up too Kurt Hummel staring down at them with a look of complete bewelderment on his face, but in typical fashion the first words out of his mouth are, "And my father didn't burn those synthetic fibers the moment he laid eyes on them and replace them with the guest pyjamas that I have supplied for all ages and sizes in the hall closet? I've trained him better than this." And he's out the door like nothing even happened.

"What was that?" Sarah asks goggily.

"That was Hurricane Hummel, were right in the center of the eye." Noah says, because hurricanes fascinate Sarah, they apparently move her, and bring passion to her heart. Noah thinks it's a bunch of bullshit, but whatever.

Eventually they fall into a schedule and it's so much like a real family that Noah starts to become Puck again and lashes out at everything. From how Kurt is always on the phone with his boyfriend, or how he's always hogging the bathroom and teaching Sarah how to put make-up on. From how Finn looks at him like he doesn't know who he is anymore and he's torn between wanting to remember and wanting to stay away.

One night when Puck comes crawling in at three in the morning, lipstick smeared all over his face, a beer bottle loosely held in his hand, and a buzz that makes him just a tad bit pliant and confrontational, Burt Hummel meets him in the family room. He's sitting in a chair, a thick book in his lap, and a stern expression on his face. Puck sits across from him and waits for the worst, waits for the blow of him having screwed up the best thing he's had in a long time.

"I've cut you some slack because you've been going through a rough patch, but not anymore." Burt starts, "Tomorrow, I'm going to wake you up bright and early and extra loud, then you're going to take the leaf blower and get the last of the leaves out of the yard, afterwards I need some help in the shop. I need someone to run the shop-vac in the cars to get them ready to go home." Noah thinks he knows why Kurt never drank after the Bambie incident now.

Noah takes his punishment with no complaint, and spends the next few weeks being golden, being the son that Carole deserves. One night Finn comes into his room, he's fidgeting more than normal, and he looks so lost.

He sits beside Noah, and just stares for a minute, "Dude," He starts, "I know that we're like... whatever, not what were were but this is insane. You were, like, drowning and we all saw it, but I was waiting for you to come to me like you always did, but I guess... I mean, you would have before... before, you would've told me right? Before things with Quinn and Rachel got so fucked you would have told me right?" He asks, pleading.

"Yeah, I would have told you before, because before I deserved to be saved. This time I only did it for Sarah, because she's young enough, innocent enough to be saved." Noah tells Finn, curling in on himself.

"You're wrong. You deserve it too, you're my bro, just like Kurt. You don't get to pick your family dude."

Awww, I love Burt's "bright and early and extra-loud," and the Hudmels in general.
