Fill 4/? rofro05 February 12 2012, 17:23:39 UTC
After that weekend Carole was a little ashamed of how she was feeling about Kurt. He was a really great kid that was very responsible and helped out without being asked. But not even knowing all of Kurt's good qualities could change her feelings towards him.

For a couple of weeks things were fairly normal and Carole wondered if she had been reading too much into a few perfectly harmless interactions. To be honest she was starting to feel a little silly about her privet hissy fit that she had been throwing.

So with a new open mind towards their family dynamic, Carole planned a family movie night. Hopefully if she had a hand in planning their activities she could cut down on the little thing that might bother her. And Kurt seemed excited about the idea. He was very enthusiastic about helping her prepare all of the snacks for their evening.

Burt claimed the middle of the couch with Finn in the recliner. Kurt curled up on one end of the couch leaving the other end for her. Carole leaned in and snuggled into Burt's side. As the four of them settled down in the family room, Carole was more convinced than ever that she had been over reacting. And she was looking forward to enjoying a nice evening. Finn jumped up and popped in his choice, some kind of horror thriller, into the DVD player.

Thirty minutes into the movie Carole couldn't help but notice that Burt seemed to be pulling away from her a little. At first he thought that he just needed more room to shift and moved over towards the arm of the sofa to give him some space. But instead settling back down against her side Burt seemed to move even further away.

“Do you need more room?” she finally leaned in to whisper. “I can sit in the middle for a while if you need me to.”

“No, that's alright.” Burt whispered back giving her a funny look.

Carole almost responded, but when she leaned in to whisper she saw that the movement that she had assumed was restless shifting had really been Burt moving over to let Kurt curl into his side. The all too familiar jealous feelings bubbled up inside her and Carole fought the urge to say something scathing and unkind. Why was it that Kurt got to curl up while she was sitting there alone?

The rational part of her brain fought to push down her ugly feelings. She knew that Kurt wasn't the biggest fan of horror movies. And it was only natural that he would look to his dad for comfort. But that didn't mean that she was thrilled by the fact that Kurt was all curled up and cozy with his dad and she was all alone at the other end of the sofa.

She fumed for the rest of the movie. When it was over Kurt jumped up to pop in The Sound of Music. Burt settled back into the middle of the couch. Carole leaned in to wrap her hands around his arm feeling petty.

Once again she was blowing things out of proportion. Burt had been comforting Kurt during a scary movie and she was acting like a silly school girl. She really had to get over all this before it started to cause problems with their family dynamic.

All those little things adding up for Carole... Still love your fill, your writing is very nuanced, even in those short installments, and believable regarding the family-dynamic!

This is a really cool story. I can understand her frustration at how Kurt and Burt act towards each other in a way that leaves her out. And how she can rationalize everything for how innocent it really is. But all these little things will build up to be big things.

Really looking forward to more.
