“Sam.” He said. “Go help Carole with her bags, would you kid?” Sam nodded, and Burt noticed he looked a bit guilty about something.
“So… Kurt, Puckerman, where’d you all end up for Finn’s birthday last night?”
Kurt was shifting uneasily, and Puck wouldn’t even meet his eyes. “Listen Mr. H,” Puck began, but Kurt cut him off.
“Dad, last night I did something exceptionally cruel and unforgiveable and I feel absolutely terrible about it.”
Burt nodded calmly, for all he knew he’d ruined someone’s favourite shirt. His kid was nothing, if not dramatic.
“What happened, Kurt?”
“Dad, I… and Rachel, we forgot Finn’s birthday. He told us that you guys weren’t heading home, so the family dinner was cut, but that we could still go out for dinner and I… I told him that, that Rachel and I had more important things to do for our NYADA auditions than have dinner with him and his friends. I just… I forgot. I didn’t remember why we had been planning dinner; I just assumed you had more congress news…”
Sam and Carole had returned at that point and Sam took up the dialogue.
“It’s not just Kurt and Rachel. I didn’t know either. I
left to go play videogames with Puck like every week, but Puck… well, he knew it was Finn’s birthday and he asked me what I was doing there. And when he figured out Finn was alone, he knew all the stuff that Carole used to do for Finn’s birthdays… the waffle log cabin and the cake from the diner, so we picked up the food, and we brought over some beer… sorry, Burt… we just wanted him to feel better.”
Burt nodded, deciding to leave the beer-in-the-house talk for another day. “Well, Kurt, Sam… I can’t say I’m not disappointed. Eighteen’s a pretty big birthday, and I’m grateful to Puckerman here that Finn didn’t spend it alone.”
