FILL (Part 3: FINN) anonymous February 11 2012, 21:35:45 UTC
Finn felt like crap.

His mom and Burt had called that morning to tell him that they loved him and hoped he had a happy birthday but they wouldn’t be able to make it home until the next day. Burt had been really apologetic, realizing that Finn had never spent a birthday without his mom and that it was really his fault that they were even in Washington in the first place.

Finn had been bummed then, but lightened a bit when Burt told Finn where to find the cash in his office and told him to treat himself, Kurt, Sam, and Rachel to a birthday dinner. He’d even told him he could take Puck, and Burt Hummel did not like Puck.

But as soon as Finn had told Kurt that Burt and Carole weren’t coming home, but that they said they could all still go out for dinner, Kurt had blown him off, informing him very sharply that if his dad wasn’t there to force his hand, he and Rachel had much more important things to do to prepare for their NYADA auditions than dine with the three stooges that evening.

Finn couldn’t understand why Kurt didn’t want to spend his birthday with him. Hadn’t Kurt just called them brothers, like, yesterday? On Kurt’s birthday Finn had even worn a dinner jacket for him. Finn had called Rachel next, but Kurt had evidently called her as soon as he left the house. Before he had so much as said ‘birthday dinner’ she had said that Kurt was quite right, that they could do dinner anytime, but Kurt’s and her auditions were coming closer and they needed to practice.

So his brother and his girlfriend would rather spend time together on his birthday than with him. That was great. Awesome. Par for the course, really. After all he wasn’t a good enough football player for a scholarship, he wasn’t a good enough singer for NYADA, he just wasn’t… good enough. They had both, at separate times, told him not to think that way. That he was underestimating himself. But he thought their decisions tonight had made things pretty clear.

So when Sam left, calling ‘I’m heading to Puck’s.’ over his shoulder, Finn hadn’t even protested. He sat on the couch watching nothing for another half an hour, before deciding to go to bed. At least if he were asleep he wouldn’t have to think about how shitty he felt.

Falling asleep was harder than he remembered it being, he tossed and flipped and kicked and still his mind would not settle down. Finn was usually pretty awesome at clearing his head, so this was a new experience. Finally he stuck his headphones in his years, set the sleep timer on his iPod for 15 minutes, and let Journey sing him into submission. He had to jump through quite a few songs to find one that didn’t remind him of his girlfriend, but eventually….

Next thing Finn knew, he was on the floor. The lights were flashing and for a minute he had a horrible feeling that it was an alien abduction, but when he saw Puck’s smirking face and Sam’s hesitant one, he wanted to know what the hell was going on.

The whole thing was kind of funny, kind of not. He forgot what a good friend Puck could be. Probably like over half of the time he was kind of a jerk, but he’d always have these moments where he knew exactly what Finn needed to stop feeling down on himself. Like when Santana had been going after his body every freaking minute of every day and Puck had told him that he needed him to come to the weight room with him, ‘cause he was going to go up in his bench press and he needed a spotter who was actually strong enough to keep up.

Sam had also become a pretty awesome friend this year. And yeah, he kind of knew that Sam didn’t know it was his birthday and Puck was covering for him, but he was here, and that’s better than everyone else. And really, a waffle house was meant for three, so it was a good thing Sam was there to replace his mom.

He was kind of having an awesome time too; chilling on the couch, eating waffles and shooting the shit with his boys. Had it been any night other than his birthday it would have been perfect, but today… well, it just wasn’t what he had expected.

They were all also kinda half in the bag.

“It’s just- I mean, for Kurt’s birthday we all went to this really uncomfortable fancy restaurant, and I dressed up, and used the right fork and stuff, and I had dinner with Rachel’s freaking dads on her birthday, and dude, if meeting one father’s scary, meeting two is god damn terrifying. But I did it, right? And now they’re with each other, instead of me, and it just kind of sucks, right? ‘Cause Rachel’s my girlfriend and I’m gonna marry her someday, and Kurt’s my brother and I freaking love him, so I’m not being stupid right? I mean, I’m allowed to be mad?”

“N’stupid.” Puck slurred, and Sam nodded vigorously in agreement. Between the three of them they’d finished the waffles, half the cake, and both cases of beer.

“You’re an awesome fucking friend, Finn. I’m shit, and Sam’s kind of shit.” Sam made an indignant noise, but then shrugged in agreement. “You’re still better than me, dude, but you’re fucking tops Finn. So let’s cut this pity shit in half, I’m gonna break into your parents liquor cab.”
