A/N: I have no idea what genre Rise Against is actually considered. This is mildly self-indulgent. I think anyone familiar with the song would get where Kurt is coming from, which is why most of the guys seem to be on his side. I am basing the fact that Finn likes Rise Against purely on him being familiar with MCR, despite the fact that I know that they're probably not even considered similar bands. /doesn't bother to sort music she likes into genres beyond 'kinda punk-rocky', 'pop', and 'old stuff'. Also, a lyrics vid for the song in question can be found here.

“I have news everyone! I think I’ve found us our last song,” Mr. Schue announced, waving sheet music. “I know you guys think my taste in music is stuck in the last century, but this is by a group that some of you might know…”

Finn looked up. “Rise Against? Sick, Mr. Schue!”

Several of the guys made sounds of agreement, while the girls just looked relieved that something had finally been picked. The anti-bullying assembly was only a few days away, and they wanted to be ready for it. It was an issue that affected each and every one of them, after all.

“This song is called Make It Stop. I’m not sure how many of you are familiar with it, but you’ll know when you read the lyrics what it’s about. I was thinking that maybe Puck or Artie could take lead on this one, since Finn and Blaine already have solos.”

Puck nodded his head, looking amenable if not overly excited, and Artie shrugged. Everyone was flipping through the sheet music, with the exception of Kurt. He was looking straight at Mr. Schue as he slowly raised his hand into the air.

“Yes, Kurt?”

“I… Would really like to sing lead for this, actually,” he said firmly, his fingers crumpling the paper a little.

Puck and Finn exchanged glances. Mr. Schue looked flabbergasted. The room was totally silent for several long moments, until Artie began to snicker softly. Tina and Rachel turned to look at him, eyebrows raised, and he hurried to explain himself.

“I mean, rock is kind of… boy’s genre, you know?” he said. “Like, no offense or anything Kurt, but-”

Mr. Schue cut him off. “He’s right, Kurt, this isn’t the kind of song that you usually sing. Of course I’ll consider it, but I just think that your voice isn’t really suited to it.”

The room seemed to hold its collective breath as Kurt’s cheeks flushed red.

“Do you even know who Rise Against are?” Artie finished his previous question.

Kurt stood up, his lips pressed tightly together. “I listen to that song almost every day, Artie,” he hissed. “Regardless of your outdated ideas of which gender should listen to which kind of music, I would think that you would have noticed by now that I am a boy. Just because you don’t think that I’m ‘masculine’ enough to sing your oh-so-precious rock music doesn’t mean that you can make a joke out of me in front of the entire Glee club. That entire fucking song is about acceptance. I am a boy. A gay boy, but a boy, just like you’re a boy despite your wheelchair.”

His voice was rising more and more as he got more agitated, but no one seemed to think it was funny. For all that they snickered at Rachel’s diva fits, Kurt in a fury was a sight to behold. Artie just looked confused.

“I didn’t mean to- look, I’m sorry, okay?”

“I am so tired of being told that I’m not enough of a man to do this or I’m too feminine for that. I would think that you of all people would understand how much it fucking sucks when people make assumptions about you as a person based on appearances.” He strode towards the door. “Screw you.”

There was dead silence. Mr. Schue seemed to want to sprint towards the door and either give one of his patented motivational speeches or send Kurt to the principal for his language. Blaine stood up and cleared his throat.

“Um, I think I’d better go after him. If you guys could- just, leave us alone for a while?”
