Hughes should have lived. Any number of men he had killed himself with the four swords he went through did not trouble Enjolras’ mind. But of all of his friends, Combeferre should have survived. He would not have taken up the banner for himself, but he could have taught someone who would. The leaders were more impressive martyrs. Let the teachers live to explain.
But it was Combeferre who had died- not even fighting, but tending the wounded, and Enjolras knew he had put him there.
He also knew he would be able to beg his cousin’s forgiveness before long.
