here i am again, sitting at the bank, bored out of my fucking skull. it’s been hella long since i updated my journal, so i figured i’d grace you bitches with my presence on your friends pages.
this summer’s been....fast, so far. after school let out, i spent the next week packing and cleaning the ghark. it was quite a task, and even after christyal and i spent literally one entire day cleaning the shit, after everything was out, we’re still not getting our whole deposit back. what the fuck ever...you win some, you lose some. i’m just looking forward to living in the same place with the same person for the entire school year next year. someone moved in or moved out every quarter last year. that shit was doin way too much.
i had a sort of crappy fourth of july...my aunt, uncle and cousin were over [which was the non-shitty part] and brought their dog, who has never had a problem with my dog until the fourth. they started fighting, and then i stupidly reached in to pull lily off and wound up with my aunt’s dog biting my ring finger and tearing the nail up from the nail bed, and almost in half, left-to-right across the middle. plus, i found out that morning that my dad’s been slipping back into his alcoholism. to add insult to injury, that was also my last day with my best amigo, christian martinez, who left the next morning for buenos aires, where he will be staying an indefinite period of time. hopefully, i’m going to go down there and visit him [and the argentinian countryside] in august, but i was still bummed. add to that one and a half 40-ounce bottles of malt liquor, and i was a blubbering mess.
the next morning i woke up and i realized that i need to give up alcohol again. when i drink hard liquor, i always want to get fucked up and end up drinking like 10-15 shots, so i gave hard liquor up a few weeks ago. but when i drink beer, i also always wish i was drunker, and end up drinking a whole 12-pack to the face. that’s gonna turn me into a fat drunk [and fat is describing my body, not my addiction.] plus, overall, when i’m drunk, i’m obnoxious and overemotional, which is not exactly an appealing combination for my friends to have to deal with. [i’d much rather subject them to giggly and aloof.] annnnd i don’t want to grow up to become a drunk or a fatass, so i’ve decided to lay off the sauce.
what else is new in patrickland?
oh!! i’m really excited because this summer, i’m partaking in a mixtape exchange! the member roster ranges from a DJ/producer/radio host in Sacramento, to a ticket office supervisor at the Seattle Opera, to a former drummer of the Velvet Teen, to a former bassist and 8-year touring member of Luckie Strike, to a Human Sexuality/Psychology grad student, to the son of a famous Mexican ranchero singer of the 50’s and 60’s, to a guy who moved to China for a year to teach English, to little ole’ me. needless to say, it’s a prestigious and exciting list of people, and i hope their musical tastes are as freewheeling and ridiculous as my own.
the way it works is that we each take a week, and when it’s your week, you send out copies of your mix cd to all the members. this also means you get a new mix every week, from other music geeks who are into cool shit. as soon as my boy kevin [the former bassist from luckie strike] told me about the group, i absolutely insisted that he let me join, simply because this has been a fantasy of mine for a long time. and quite frankly, i can’t fucking wait.
my only issue is that my week is the second week! so i have to come up with my theme, STAT! so i can get the tracklist worked out and get crackin get-get crackin’ [yeah M.I.A.] on the cover artwork....so peep the scene. these are the ideas i’ve come up with thus far:
multi-culti and lovin’ it: bands who prove you don’t need to be white to rock! this would feature the likes of tv on the radio, don caballero, islands, trail of dead, and i dunno...the yeah yeah yeahs or some shit.
loud music that doesn’t suck: as the title implies, this would be a bunch of music that i think is worthy of listening to, and also worthy of fist-pumpin and pit-moshin. these bands would be post-punkers like dismemberment plan, les savy fav and the detachment kit, noise-rockers like hella, test icicles, and lightning bolt, plus some throwbacks like the slits, gang of four, and maybe some zep and ac-dc.
hoes in different area codes: hip hop from around the globe. my boy kevin tells me that the group is sort of lacking in the good hip hop department, and that sort of makes me feel like i should supplement that shit. this mix would feature a couple tracks from each area; probably some cam’ron, juelz, and jigga from the east coast, david banner, clipse, and dem franchise boyz from the dirty, a shitload of hyphy shit for the west coast [maybe “california love” for good measure], lady sovereign, bruza, and dizzee rascal for them brits, cuizinier and some TTC fools for france, and i dunno...maybe some other shit. cafe tacuba kinda sorta has a mexican rap song...whatever.
henny, hoes, and hyphy juice: [also potentially known as “the bay is alive and poppin”] strictly bay shit. if i attacked this, i would want it to be a sort of touch-and-go introduction into the hyphy movement. i’d include the classic e-40, federation and keak tracks that actually feature the word in the title, as well as some samples of lesser-known bay artists like mistah f.a.b., the pack, the team, turf talk, droop-E, and frontline. also, i’d have no choice but to include “feelin myself” or “thizz dance” by mac dre.
did you hit the wrong fucking note?: chromaticism in popular music. this would highlight bands who go beyond the basic I-IV-V-I progressions into more remote key areas and chord groupings. this is by far the headiest of the ideas, but it’s also the one that i’ve spent the most time thinking about. it would include music by elvis costello, radiohead, lightning bolt, stephen malkmus, wire, the dismemberment plan, the fucking champs, and even some e-40 [“growin up”] and snoop/pharell [“drop it like it’s hot”].
anyone have an opinion on which one i should do? anyone have a suggestion that i haven’t thought of? lemme know, because i’m interested in public opinion for this shit. although, to be honest, i think i’m going to make all of these mixes anyway, even if just for myself, because i think each of these ideas is kinda cool in its own way. if anyone wants copies of this shit, let me know....i’ll be posting tracklists as i make ‘em.
well, i’ve now wasted a good 45 minutes of my time, but since i’m super-efficient at my work and i never take breaks, i don’t really feel that bad. but alas, it’s now 4:53, and it’s time for me to hit the dusty trails. take care, folks.
patrick’s recommended download of the day: detachment kit: vanish or vanquish! i didn’t really like this band all that much upon first hearing their second record, ...of this blood. however, after listening to first record they raging, quiet army, and blood a few more times, i’m officially a fan. whaddayaknow.
fear of the day: academic intimidation! these music heads are....heady! :)
joy of the day: that i have another excuse to make mixes!
