[Background]
Rapunzel's history is, of course, all wrapped up in a fairytale. Her parents were the King and Queen of a peaceful and happy kingdom. When the Queen took ill late into her pregnancy, the kingdom at large headed out to the surrounding countryside looking for a magical miracle.
Given that this is a fairytale, they found it: a magic golden flower that had sprung up long before from a fallen drop of sunlight. The magic flower -- made into what was undoubtedly a delicious, sunny tea -- healed the queen and all seemed well with the world.
Of course, the old woman who'd been hoarding this magic flower and singing to it to stay young for an unnaturally long time, was displeased. Extremely displeased.
Then Rapunzel was born. She was born healthy and happy and with a head of hair to rival most 80s hair metal bands. The King and Queen were overjoyed, but their joy did not last. The old woman -- Gothel -- snuck into the palace. When she discovered that the young princess's hair had taken on the power of the magic flower, she tried to cut it. Cutting it, however, stripped it of its magic. So instead, Gothel kidnapped the princess and fled with her into the night. Despite the kingdom searching for her desperately, the lost princess remained unfound, hidden by Gothel in a tall tower in a hidden clearing deep in the forest.
For the next 18 years, Rapunzel remained in this tower. Gothel raised her as her own daughter, and Rapunzel never thought to question that fact.
Despite being kept isolated in a tower, separate from the entire world outside Gothel, Rapunzel grew up to be a kind, clever girl. She spent most of her time in the tower occupying herself with hobbies and learning -- especially painting -- and playing with her pet chameleon and constant companion, Pascal. Every year on her birthday, however, she watched a show of lights from the window of her tower. The lights were sent up by the King and Queen and the entire kingdom in the hopes that the lost princess would someday return. Appropriately enough, it was these lights and Rapunzel's desire to see them that eventually led her to disobey her mother and leave the tower -- after securing herself a guard.
After Gothel exploded in anger and told Rapunzel that she would never be allowed to leave the tower, Rapunzel decided to take matters into her own hands. Fate had conveniently enough delivered her a wayward thief. With her trusty frying pan, she managed to knock him unconscious, hide his ill-gotten loot and tie him up with her rather useful hair. With only a bit of blackmail and/or coercion, she convinced him to be her guide, take her to the floating lights and bring her safely back to the tower -- all while Gothel is gone for several days on an errand.
This was a pivotal moment for Rapunzel. Her entire life began to change the moment her feet touched the ground outside her tower. Her thief-turned-trail-guide Flynn Rider tried again and agian to dissuade her from completing the journey to see the floating lanterns. Rapunzel, however, was not to be swayed from following out her dream. Throughout the journey, regardless of encounters with ruffians and thugs (whom she made friends with anyway). She and Flynn grew closer, coming to like and then -- perhaps predictably -- fall in love with one another. Flynn told her his true name and his past as a penniless orphan. Rapunzel showed him the magical abilities of her hair and shared why she had never before left her tower.
However, before they arrived at the kingdom, Gothel discovered Rapunzel gone. She gives her Flynn's satchel and the tiara that he and his accomplices stole, telling Rapunzel to give it to him as a test of his true feelings.
Too afraid at first, Rapunzel hid the crown once more. She and Flynn made it to the kingdom the next day. After a day spent exploring, the two head out on a boat to view the lanterns. Rapunzel decided then to give Flynn the crown. Seemingly, Flynn was more interested in being with her than the crown. The lights began to rise in the sky and Rapunzel finally realized the dream that had finally brought her out of her tower.
Her joy was shortlived, however. Flynn caught sight of his accomplices and realized that they could cause trouble for him and Rapunzel. A first kiss is interrupted before it can happen, and Flynn took the crown to give back to his former partners in crime so they would leave Rapunzel alone. This did not work out, however, since the accomplices had been tricked by Gothel. They tied Flynn to a boat and set him sailing with the crown towards the castle guards.
Rapunzel, unaware of all of this, believed Flynn had run off with the crown and left her behind. His former accomplices appeared and tried to kidnap her. Gothel arrived and ostensibly saved the day, though this had all been orchestrated by her.
Heartbroken by what she believed to be Flynn's betrayal, Rapunzel returned with Gothel to the tower. However, all the things that Rapunzel had seen in her travels as wel as the symbol of the shining sun, the kingdom's emblem, that she had subconsciously included in her artwork came together in her mind and led her to the realization that she was the lost princess. She confronted Gothel about this, and learned that Gothel had sent Flynn to the castle guards and his death.
Rapunzel chose then to stand her ground against her "mother" and Gothel gagged and chained her in the tower.
This is about where she last was before she when she would be appearing in game.
[Personality]
Unlike many home-schooled children, Rapunzel seems to be decently adept at interacting with other people and making fast friends. In all her 18 years growing up in her tower, her only interaction has been with the woman she believed to be her mother and a fairly intelligent pet chameleon, origin unknown.
Despite being kept so isolated and alone, Rapunzel retains a cheerful and inquisitive nature. She reads voraciously and has a swarm of hobbies to keep herself occupied in her tower. The one which seems to be her favorite is painting, and her artistic nature is on display all over the walls and ceiling of her tower in the form of murals -- many of which depict Rapunzel herself in different situations. She also shows a definite love of learning and curiosity, going so far as to chart the stars that she can see from within her tower.
Even with all her hobbies and past times, there is a part of Rapunzel that yearns for more. She feels that her life is stuck before it's even begun. This gets encapsulated in her dream to leave her tower and see the floating lanterns. The problem with this is that she is also by nature a loyal and obedient girl. Mother Gothel has forbidden her from leaving the tower. When Rapunzel does decide to leave against her mother's wishes, she is initially very torn over whether or not she is doing the right things. She wants desperately to follow her dream and live her life on the way there, but she also worries about how much it will hurt and upset her mother.
Eventually, her adventurous spirit and the deep desire she has to experience the floating lanterns in person win out and she heads out without much further second thinking.
Living in a tower for 18 years has left her with a couple major weaknesses that quickly come to light on the road to the floating lights. For one, she is quite naive. She trusts things without questioning them, including Flynn when he is very obviously trying to trick her into going back to her tower. However, she also seems to be immune to some of his tricks, and keeps him in line with cynical looks and a deflty wielded frying pan. Additionally, all the years of isolation with only Mother Gothel to tell her about the outside world, Rapunzel is very afraid of ruffians and thugs (who may or may not have pointy teeth) and other such unkind and unsavory characters.
On this journey, Rapunzel begins to overcome these fears though. In fact when there is trouble and danger, she tends to step up and act almost fearlessly, doing things like jumping off cliffs and swinging from her hair. She also demonstrates herself to be extremely charismatic. She manages to make friends with an entire tavern of ruffians and thugs, a step which helps her overcome much of her fear of that archetype.
More often than not, Rapunzel is cheerful and outgoing. She's generally optimistic. Her confidence in herself grows throughout her journey from her tower to the kingdom, perhaps because she is away from Mother Gothel who quite often points out (in song) a large amount of flaws and problems that Rapunzel possesses. She eventually stands up to her mother, something that eventually leads to her coming to realize that she's been lied to for her entire life.
It's only once in the movie that she really displays a genuine anger (rather than annoyance or exasperation) and it is towards Gothel once Rapunzel discovers the truth. In her anger so is mostly calm and cold
Rapunzel does still have issues of self doubt. Even when she finally is on the precipice of realizing her dream and seeing the floating lanterns, she questions what will happen if it's not everything she's dreamed of for so long. She also questions what will happen if it is all she's expected. In a way, she's almost unsure how to define herself outside that dream.
Rapunzel takes promises very seriously. When she gives her word, she never breaks that promise, even if it has a negative effect on her own life.
She has shown that she cares deeply for her friends, being willing to give up her freedom for the rest of her life in order to save Flynn from dying.
Over all, she's a strong, kind and optimistic person, but she's also very young and extremely sheltered and inexperienced. The world is an unknown to her, and she still has trouble with her naivete and general inexperience.
[Specialties/Abilities]
Rapunzel's main abilities center around her hair. Her hair is golden and extremely long. She seems to have a bit of extraordinary strength when her hair is involved. She routinely hauls Gothel all the way up to the tower with her hair. She also climbs and swings around on it. It seems to some degree she has the ability to wield it like an expertly used whip -- winding it about things large and small in a rather dexterous matter. More obviously, her hair glows when she sings an incantation; beyond glowing, it also has the ability to heal injuries and to reverse the effects of aging.
Beyond this, Rapunzel is quite good at painting, singing, dancing, baking, sewing and several other hobbies she picked up in her 18 years confined to her tower.
Like many a Disney princess, she also seems to have the ability to communicate to some extent with animals. She and Pascal carry on conversations, and she shows a talent for calming and making friends with Maximus as well.
[Affection] Go for it! Rapunzel is an affectionate little thing, so be on the look out for hugs and kisses on the cheek.
[Fighting] Fights are fine if they come up. Please ask if it winds up coming down to serious injury. And as an aside, Rapunzel is the type to avoid fights, but when it comes to it she will defend herself with her frying pan if it comes to it.
[Other Permissions] I'm generally easy going about this, but giving me a heads up is much appreciated! For 4th wall breaking, please don't spoil her specific canon end for her. I want her to fret over Eugene's fate. But the general "omg you're from a fairytale" thing is fine. :)
[Other Facts]Chameleons are not, in fact, frogs.
