Holidailies Post 22 - Inspiration and It's Shiny!

Dec 30, 2008 20:44

In honor of all things Shiny (which Sis mentioned earlier today), I present you with a Blanket. Why a Blanket?

Well, according to them...

Blanket is a free PDF online magazine that is aimed at uncovering art + design + photography from the talented people who create it.

The name blanket came from the simple idea that we wanted to ‘cover’ all the areas of art, design and photography and bring them together in one magazine.

Why is it Shiny? There's a couple of pages on Steampunk items near the end. And we all know that the best Steampunk is always Shiny (or grungy, oil smudged, patina-ed). I've skimmed through this issue, and haven't had a chance to read it in full, yet. However, the magazine literally drips inspiration (truly, it's actually ocher-colored, who would have thought?)

There's something that's on my mind, but I'm not quite sure how to approach it. I've heard/read many people use the phrase Shiny before. I honestly don't recall it being used that much growing up, at least not in the manner it is used now. I became enamored with its use to describe something of exceeding beauty, craftsmanship, or just plain cool (well, better than plain cool, but that's the point) much later in my life. I remember it being used in Joss Whedon's wonderful series Firefly (insert venting against Fox for canceling yet another show before they should have), and it just fit so well; especially when Kaylee would use it.

So even though it's not truly a Steampunk reference (the star ships aren't steam-powered in Firefly), I always put that show (along with its slang) in the category of Steampunk. Hence, any wonderfully new, creative item that even vaguely resembles something wonderfully old has become Shiny. At least in my book.

So, don't forget to take a look at the latest issue of Blanket (a wonderful find for me today), and I'd like to thank Mr. von Slatt for pointing it out.
