Thoughts on 4.02

Sep 26, 2008 11:00

Disclaimers: These are just my own thoughts and opinions, and I'm putting them here mostly just to hear myself talk. I'm not a tv critic or a film major or theology major or even someone who is required to use critical thinking on a day-to-day basis. I'm just a fan.

Okay, so, in no particular order:

This is the first episode of Supernatural that I have ever seen that actually had me...kinda scared. Whether it was the timing or music or the set-up, I don't know, but it actually got my heart pounding. Well done.

The whole angel, devil, God thing should be cheesy.

It's not.

I'm actually really on board with the arc that the show is establishing this season. I like the way that they're dealing with it. I feel like we're seeing it through Dean's skeptical eyes.

I like that angels are scary mofos. Fits right in, and I love Castiel and the actor who plays him.

Not sold on the new Ruby. I don't think she's a bad actress, but she doesn't seem much like the old Ruby. Also, every time she talks I feel like she's on the verge of tears.

Okay, confession time: I didn't realize that Ruby was the girl from Sam's room in the premiere until I read it in someone's LJ. Don't know if it was the darkness of the diner or the wardrobe and hair change, I just completely missed it and thought it was someone else. I guess that shows how bad I am with faces.

Yay for:

-Bobby's panic room!

-Bobby building it on a "weekend off"!

-Dean mentioning the Star Trek Experience! (That's two sci-fi references so far this season!)

-The shameless use of cute little twin girls to scare the holy hell out of the audience!

-Dean and Sam not being completely covered in layers and layers of clothing the entire episode! (We know there's good stuff under there, why won't they ever let us see it?)

-Dean letting Sam have the couch!

-Hendricksen!

-Meg!

-Ronald!

More confessions:

I love, love, love Dean's self-esteem issues. I love the look that Bobby and Sam exchange when Dean asks "why me?" Like they don't know how to answer, or maybe they don't understand why he's asking. I love the sad music.  And the whole "why do bad things happen to good people?" conversation. Yeah, it's not an original thought, but wouldn't it have been weirder if nobody asked it? And I really feel like Dean is asking valid questions here, because, hey, no angel reached down and saved mom or dad or Sam when they died. Why him? What makes him so special? From Dean's perspective he's probably the person who least deserves to be saved. He's really looking for answers here.

Oh, and I loved how Castiel threatened Dean at the end. I loved it so.

I wanted to get more into Sam's headspace, but I think that will be a big reveal later on down the line.

I love Jim Beaver and I'm glad we got two episodes in a row with him, but I'm starting to feel the itch of someone who's sat in one place for too long. Let's get those boys back on the road!

This could just be my imagination, but has Jensen lost weight? He seems to be rocking the hollow-cheeked look even more than just last episode. Hey, up ten or down ten, he's just a flat-out beautiful man. Just expressing my concern is all.

Where is Dean's leather jacket? Sam, tell me you didn't donate it to the Salvation Army.

Talky, talky, talky angry ghosts! They were never this chatty when they were alive. Liked the action sequence at the end when they finally got down to the serious business of trying to kill our heroes.

Good shot with the chandelier, Dean!

Overall, I really liked this episode. Really looking forward to 4.03.
