The N word

The Lucinator loves to watch videos of people playing video games.  I know that's a big deal now, and some people have their own channel on gaming sites and announce when and what they'll be playing.

It is usually harmless (if obnoxious) fun, but Lucas, being an Aspie, will hang on their every word because it interests him, and will often repeat the sessions verbatem, ad nauseum :-)

About a week ago he was recounting a game of Terraria where the players were calling each other the N word in a "friendly" way.

He said it and I jumped all over him, told him I never wanted to hear him say that, and tried to explain that sometimes black people, especially young people, will use that word with each other but he can NEVER say it and he's grounded off the computer if I find out he's watching gamer vids where that word is used.

I'm usually not that rough and he listened with an expression that said, "Oh, crap, I really made her mad!"

After I finished he said he was sorry and would never say it again.

Me:  Good

Lucas:  Mom?

Me: Yeah?

Lucas:  What does it mean?

So I had to explain the N word, along with a brief history of race relations in the US.

I guess if he's made it to eleven without hearing that word at his (very diverse) school or in public, something right is happening.
