It's been eons since I updated, because I'm pretty depressed and projects at work are kicking my ass. And partly because of other stuff.
On Wednesday, SPN returns for season 8, and all the promos have made me 1) really excited for the new season with the new producer, and 2) madder than a flasher at a nudist colony. I won't go into it, for those unspoiled, but I've been led down the path to cardiac arrest in seasons past by previews, so I'll wait for the real thing before passing judgement (or passing out).
What I wanted to do with this post and the next is ponder the incongruity of seasons 6 & 7.
These seasons featured, without a doubt, some of the finest SPN eps ever filmed, but overall the stories and characterizations were disappointing. There were awesome eps despite of Sera's leadership, not because of it.
I know some of you bugged out after Swan Song, which tied up the five-season arch in a pretty, Kripke-esque bow, and frankly, that wasn't a bad decision - except for these great eps!
So if you are still interested in the show, I'm giving you a list I've cherry picked that are excellent, and well worth your time. I only have time for one tonight - hopefully a couple more tomorrow.
First Awesome Ep:
6x04 - Weekend at Bobby's. Bobby is eager to get out of his season 5 deal with Crowley. Crowley exposes the fine print and says no dice. This ep is awesome because it goes in a dozen directions at once. Dean is angsting about Sam, Rufus shows up with the corpse of a Japanese monster that may or may not be really, totally, completely dead, Bobby has a demon tied up in his basement, the FBI shows up hot on the trail of Rufus, Bobby's new neighbor tries to romance him with a casserole, Sheriff Mills has to save the day, Rufus swallows a ring and gets arrested, Bobby summons a ghost, Sam gets slammed around by a Greek monster, Dean has to get on an airplane, we learn for what Crowley sold his soul back in the day, and we find out that in the hunter's monster killing arsenal, a wood chipper trumps EVERYTHING.
What's not to love? Even TWoP gave it an A+

The not so good in these first season 6 shows...
Souless!Sam, Robo!Sam, etc. It doesn't take long for viewers to know Something Is Wrong With Sammy. Part of the problem with the season is they take 11 freakin' eps to reveal what it is.
Oh, and the Campbells. Talk about wasted potential! The Campbell story line just made me mad with its uselessness and stupidity. Not to mention they character assassinated Mary's dad. Nuf said about that.
