"I wish you didn't have to go," Alex sighed. This town must be getting to her; she didn't usually state the obvious like that. "I mean, I'm not ... gonna beg you to stay or anything. Your whole life is back in New York. I just ... hate saying good-bye."

At least this time, they got to say good-bye. Last time had been a little rushed.

Her bag was packed and sitting by the door.

"Doesn't really have to be goodbye," Liv pointed out. "I know where you are now. When things are slow a visit now and then could happen."

And... when were things ever slow at SVU?

"Yeah," Alex agreed. "Whenever you get a weekend to yourself."

Which they both knew was damn near impossible.

"I'd offer to make the trip myself, but ..."

New York. Off-limits. Fucking hell.

"You can't leave this island," Olivia said in a sympathetic tone. "No way. Not until it's completely safe for you. Or when they come up with another series. When this is all over, then you can come back."

She gave a little sigh and brushed some hair out of her face. "At least it's not a complete mystery where you disappeared too. And there's a way to contact each other. Right?"

"So long as we're careful," she agreed. "If they catch you making frequent visits here, they'll know something's up."

Liv gazed at Alex's face for a few moments before opening her arms to embrace her.

"Come here. This isn't so bad," she said quietly.

"No, it's not," Alex said, stepping into Liv's arms. "It sucks, but ... I'm still alive, and you're here. That's a lot more than we could have gotten."

"God, Alex," Liv said glomping on to her fiercely, "When I saw you step out of that car only to know you were leaving..."

"They almost didn't give me that much," Alex sighed. "The FBI doesn't mess around with Witness Protection. I refused to enter unless I got to see you again. I couldn't just ... let you think ..."

A whole day. Olivia had spent hours thinking she was gone. It would have been cruel, to let her go on thinking that.

"You don't know how much that meant."

Liv couldn't think of the words to say. So instead she leaned in and gave Alex a long lingering kiss.

Alex returned the kiss, eagerly, leaning into the embrace.

Her fingers curled into the other woman's short, dark locks.

"It's not forever," she said, firmly this time. Believing it, this time. "They said it wasn't. I'll be back in New York soon. Then ... then we see what happens."

The hell with it. Maybe they stopped tiptoeing around. Maybe life was too damned short to care about her political future.

"I like the sound of that," she said tenderly touching her face.

She swallowed hard and let out a little sigh. "I probably should go."

She says rooted to the spot she's standing in.

"I know," Alex said. Not letting go of Olivia, either. "You have ... my phone number, right? And the e-mail."

One was only in case of emergency, because the other would be harder to trace.

"Yeah. I've got 'em," she said before leaning in for one final but short kiss. "I'll be in touch."

"Yeah," Alex said, nodding. "I know where to find you. Go kick some ass."

Liv belonged in New York, arresting pedophiles. Alex belonged ... right there with her, throwing the sickos in jail. She'd be back, soon enough. To New York, and to Olivia.

Only a matter of time.

"Don't I always?" She said with a grin, and... yeah. That was quick wipe of her eyes as she picked up her back and slung it over her shoulder. "Hang in there. Okay? Sooner or later we'll be having bad coffee at some hot dog stand. It'll happen."

"I believe you," she said. "One night on the town, on me. Once all of this blows over."

They would find the assassin. They would stop the organization high enough up that it would cut its losses. The FBI hadn't soft-pedaled any part of this so far; they'd announced she was legally dead, and she would have to deal with it. And even they had told her it was temporary, just until things settled.

She could wait.
