< Act 4-4 >

-Council Chamber-

Charlton: ...
And then you turned tail and came scurrying back? Is that right, Drifter...?
Charlton: I have no further questions for you.
Rupert: Don't be like that, boss! You won't even listen to my excuses?!
Rupert: I'm doin' the best I can out there! For you, boss. And for Elesius!
Charlton: The Martial Guard has suffered significant casualties for no purpose other than saving your own life.
Charlton: The costs of training and provisioning the Martial Guard are borne by the nation of Elesius. Though I expect you already know that.

[Rupert slowly unclenches his teeth.]

Rupert: I got it, I got it... So everything's all my fault, huh?
Charlton: When we put you in charge of the Martial Guard, it was with the expectation that you would take responsibility for the division.
That much should have been obvious.
Rupert: ...

[Charlton folds his arms.]

Charlton: Rupert Dandridge. Allow me to thank you for your efforts on behalf of Elesius.
I hereby relieve you of your duties as commander of the Martial Guard...
Charlton: And, in accordance with the special powers invested in this Council during times of war, I am placing you under arrest. For the crime of... Well, that can be figured out later.
Rupert: Is that the way it's gonna be, boss?

[Rupert puts his hand on his sword and yells.]

Rupert: 'Cause if so, I got my own way of doin' things!

[A slash motion flashes on the screen and it gets blocked. Eisen has stepped between the two men, maintaining a neutral expression.]

Charlton: Hah hah hah... Well done, Captain--staying the stray dog's bite with but a single hand. Truly, you Royal Knights are the pride of Elesius.
Rupert: What're you doin', beard-rat?! What do you care what happens to him?!
Royal Knights Captain Eisen: ...

[Eisen tackles Rupert, who is sent flying against the wall.]

Rupert: Arrggh...
Rupert: Urgh... What the hell...?
Charlton: The Captain of the Royal Knights has protected the Council chairman from a criminal's attack. I don't see what's so unusual about that.
Royal Knights Captain Eisen: ...
Charlton: It's one of Weisheit's parting gifts.
Rupert: What the hell kinda "gift" is that...?

[Rupert puts his hand on his sword again and smirks.]

Rupert: You can't play me for a chump like that and expect me to take it lyin' down...
Royal Knights Captain Eisen: ...
Charlton: ...

[Edna walks in.]

Edna: It always gets so noisy when the soldiers come to play... What are you wasting time on now, with Chevalet Blanc marching towards our door?!

[Katrina steps up behind Edna with a creepy gaze.]

Charlton: ...?
Rupert: And now it's the old hag and the princess? What the hell is goin' on here today?
Edna: You still need time, right, Charlton? So I've sent the Tormenta Triad out to meet them.
Edna: They should provide ample delay. Though I've also instructed them to eliminate Chevalet Blanc entirely if they have the chance.
Katrina: Something interesting is going to happen soon, right? Tee hee hee. I'm so excited...

[On the world map, the links from Port Atraige all the way to the Flatwoods are restored. A red ! marks Rasalom Keep.]

(Shop)
Shopkeeper Bigelow: Welcome! Are you alright? Oh, thank heavens! I heard Chevalet Blanc was routed at the Guardian Temple.
Shopkeeper Bigelow (Talk): This is it! The big one! Hang in there, guys!
---
Namby-Pamby Clerk: So the final battle's finally arrived... Please, I want you to defeat the Council and get Lady Katrina back safe and sound.

(Synth. Shop)
Foreman Phil: Are you prepared for the battle ahead? If you're short on anything, just let my workshop get you restocked.
Foreman Phil (Talk): If you're fighting the Martial Guard, I'll help you any way I can!
---
Workman: If you don't have at least one high-accuracy weapon, fighting high-evasion enemies will be a real pain in the neck.
It's best to always have a variety of weapons on hand for the big fights.
---
Workman: It's commonplace to choose armor based on defense, but it'd be smart to note the special abilities in the class-specific armor and go cross-class if needed.

(Pub)
Innkeeper Gaspar: Hello there. How about a little drink to rouse up all the non-underage folks in your force?
Innkeeper Gaspar (Talk): I guess this is the final conflict. The Council will have its full force out, won't it? You'd best be prepared for anything.
---
Ore Miner: Beat the snot out of the Martial Guard for us! If you run short on personnel, I'll come runnin' over with my shovel, don't you worry!

(The Elder's)
Jeune the Elder: The light of hope is slowly returning to Elesius. I will pray for Chevalet Blanc in battle.
---
Housekeeper: You're only one step away from the goal you've set for yourselves. The entire family is on your side.
---
Elder's granddaughter Toco: Good luck, everyone!

-Poliasha-

(Shop)
Shopkeeper Brown: Ah, haven't seen you in a while. It's good to see you all alive and kicking!
Shopkeeper Brown (Talk): The final battle against the Council draws near. I may be just a decrepit old man, but I will pray for your good fortune on the battlefield.
---
Gilliam the Drifter: Have you seen of a monster with an apple for a head?
They're called Grow Apples and Gella Apples, and if you manage to work it right, you'll clean up on experience or gella after beating 'em.
See, when you strike the killing blow, the experience or gella you earn depends on how much extra damage you deal beyond zero HP.
Plan your attacks so the most painful one comes at the end, and you'll be made in the shade.
---
Foreign Traveler: The martial Guard hasn't come back once. Chevalet Blanc really came through for us.

(Synth. Shop)
Muehlen the Forger: Hey hey, got something to synthesize? I don't know what the fancy trends are these days, but to me, it'll always and forever by horns 'n spikes!
Muehlen the Forger (Talk): I specialize in synthesizing weapons and armor with big, mean-looking spikes and horns on 'em!
Huge, spiky suits of armor...wrenches with decorative horns on the ends... Doesn't that sound so cool?
---
Alejandro: Well, what do you think? Poliasha's as good as new, isn't it? All of us pitched in together, y'know.

(Inn)
Ellen: What?! You've found the real Lady Alexia? Oh, my... My heart's startin' to race!
Ellen (Talk): Huh? Whaddya mean, you didn't know I had a husband? That's a funny thing to bring up all of a sudden.
Well, I did have one...a long time ago.
On a stormy night a decade ago, he went down to the sea to tie up some boats that were about to drift away...
...and he never came back.
I'm sure he's living it up in the Ocean Guardian's palace right now... He always did enjoy a good revel.
You know, I don't remember ever telling you about my husband. Did someone in the village mention him?
---
Jim the Drunk: So now some mercenary band called the Zortroa Kinship is helping the Council, huh?
It's pretty funny how they always call folks by their full names, huh? Some kinda crazy culture they got.
I wonder if they cut anything out if the guy's just got too long a name...?
By the way, have I told you my real name yet? It's Jineaus Mewton McMoneagle Pegucci IV.
---
Krelia: Clarissa... I heard the whole story.
I did have a faint suspicion that you weren't the princess. You were uncharacteristically considerate of others, for one...
I wish you could have just told us... But either way, we still owe you our lives...

(Plaza)
Brandon: Princess! Oh, and the rest of Chevalet Blanc! You're off to the capital again, yes? Good luck!!
---
Fellman: Aaaah!! What is the meaning of this?! Two Clarissas, right before my eyes!
Is this a gift fromt he Guardians, rewarding me for my efforts in the rebuilding?!
...Huh? The other one is the real Lady Alexia?
...
Pr...Prinnnnncesssss! *sob* I always knew you were alive!!

-Port Atraige-

(Shop)
Merchant Olrof: Welcome. Oh...it's you...
Merchant Olrof (Talk): Hmm...you've been through a lot, haven't you? Well, you've made it this far--nothing left but to complete the journey, I suppose.
---
Store-Minder Vitalie: Chevalet Blanc really put a damper on the Martial Guard's power trip...
---
Connie the Drifter: Hey! Haven't run into you in a while, Princess! How's it goin'?
...Wha? This kid's the real princess?
... You guys sure like to complicate things...

(Synth. Shop)
Forger Robb: Yep! It's the friendly neighborhoor synthesis shop, at your service!
Forger Robb (Talk): Yep! I inherited this shop from my father before I met my lady.
---
Mixing Girl: My husband's the man who runs this place. Hee hee...he was my dad's apprentice!
I just love mixing stuff with him!
---
Port Worker: Day after day, unloading cargo... It's not that my work doesn't fulfill me, but I wouldn,t mind leaving this port someday.
I mean, I could just hoist myself onboard the next ship that comes in...it'd be a whole new life for me. You never know.

(Bar)
Carefree Bartender: Welcome.
Carefree Bartender (Talk): You guys all right? I heard you were defeated in the Guardian Temple. Good to see you're safe, at least.
---
Battle Fanatic: The "Action Replay" skill usable by Emulators is just what it sounds like--a skill that lets you imitate other people's actions.
Let's say a unit adjacent to someone with this skill is targeted by an attack, recovery item, or something similar.
If the Action Replay skill kicks in, whatever just happened will be repeated, right on the same target.
Use Action Replay effectively, and you can unleash any sort of Original, even if you lack the necessary MP or weapon.
For that matter, you can even "use" items without having to equip them beforehand. It's pretty fun to experiment with.
However, the unit whose action you're imitating must also be adjacent to the target of the action for anything to happen.
Also, Action Replay only works for actions with a single target. And you can't imitate ranged attacks.
...Oh, and one more thing! Some Originals, like "Turn Shift", just plain don't work with it at all. So be careful.

(Outskirts)
I've been watching Chevalet Blanc and the Martial Guard squabble for over a monther now. I'm seeing this to the end if it's the last thing I do!
---
Foreign Merchant: It's starting to look bad for the Martial Guard, isn't it? Whew...glad I didn,t panic and hold a fire sale way back when.
---
Gossip Girl: "There ain't jack worth fightin' for in the Martial Guard anymore!"
"You better get your butt outta there before you get dragged into a world of hurt!"
...is what this Drifter girl told me!

-Richala Rose-

(Shop)
Orvan the Clerk: Welcome. If you're short on supplies, allow me to serve you.
Orvan the Clerk (Talk): This is the final faceoff against the Guard, right?! No problem! I know you can beat 'em!!
---
Bamburgh: Chevalet Blanc! I heard you were all slain, but here you are, safe and sound! It's time to sound the call for another counterattack!

(Synth. Shop)
Martilo III: Welcome. I'd be delighted to help you as much as I can with your final battle.
Martilo III (Talk): I have my grandfather's store...and his skills. I promise I'll do my best.
---
Vigorous Man: You're finally dueling the Council to the death, eh? Well, you better give 'em hell for us!!

(Bar)
Drifting Barkeep: Hey. Been a while, huh?
Drifing Barkeep (Talk): I was worried about you... I heard Chevalet Blanc was obliterated by Princess Katrina's powers.
---
Daniel: When you master a class up to CLV (Class Level) 7, you'll learn that class's special skill.
Special skills are powerful abilities, no matter what the class, but you cannot assign them to other classes.
If you want to use them with skills from other classes, you must choose the special skill's class, then select the other skills you want to equip.

(Quarry)
Wistful Woman: I can feel something ominous from the western volcano. Perhaps it is the King of Monsters our ancestors spoke of...
The King of Monsters... A fearsome beast who wields fire that burns a trillion degrees! Be careful if you're going that way.

[After exiting Richala Rose, a spot far to the northwest of the map will appear, named Heart of Fire, and a link from there to Dead Plateau will form. Now, Chevalet Blanc enters Rasalom Keep...]

Lluvia: This is not the path for you! The only road you need is the one to the afterlife!

[The party turns to see the Tormenta Triad standing higher up on the cliff.]

Labyrinthia: The Tormenta Triad!
Viento: We have been charged with one mission, and one mission alone: to obliterate the hateful Chevalet Blanc.
Trueno: You don't know how long we've been waiting for this moment! No reason to hold back today, is there?
Lluvia: None at all! We kill these people, and the stigma on our name will be lifted forever! The Tormenta Triad will be unblemished once more!
Clarissa: We can't lose this either, you know!
Alexia: We're going to free the capital and wrest control of Elesius away from the Council!
Labyrinthia: For the future of Elesius, and for everyone who lives here!
Viento: Well, let's see you try!
Trueno: Our untold pwoers will open your eyes, believe you me!

[They throw theirs hands up in the air and white domes shine over them for a brief instant.]

Viento: Steel Body Iron Shield!
Clarissa: Huh? Steel Iron Body Shield?!
Levin: ...Works pretty much any which way, doesn't it? Shield Body Iron Steel, same difference.
Ragnar: No, I really don't think it's the same difference, Levin... Thank you, though.
Labyrinthia: Steel Body Iron Shield has been lost to the ages...or it was supposed to be, anyway. Did you inherit that skill, or...?
Clarissa: Uhh... What's going on here? You're all losing me.
Lluvia: Oh-ho! So you know about Steel Body Iron Shield, do you?
Lluvia: Chevalet Blanc knows their stuff, I'll grant them that! I see we must not treat you lightly!
Trueno: Well, it'd be rude to stop there. We've got another special treat for you! Watch as we band together for the ultimate culmination of our skill!
Viento: From one comes many... From many is born one...

[The all spin in circles and a black cloud appears as doubles of themselves appear in front of them.]

Levin: Whoa! Doppelgangers!
Ragnar: This is what you had in store for us?!
Lluvia (X4): Wah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah!
Trueno (X4): ...Did you see that?! Our quadruple illusion, our greatest of secret skills!
Viento (X4): One becomes four! And three become twelve!
Viento (X4): With this move in our hands, you haven't the slightest chance of victory!
Clarissa: ...What the heck is going on here?! Is this even possible?!
Alexia: I don't like this... It's making me feel ill.
Levin: Wait a minute... You don't think the Tormenta Triad is really just one person, do you? Maybe he was splitting himself up into triplets all this time.
Lluvia (X4): Hey! That offends us, you know! You'd better not discriminate against us triplets!
Trueno (X4): Heh...let me tell you something before we proceed. War, you see...it's all about numbers! And we have more than ample numbers to crush you!

[The party readies itself.]

Labyrinthia: And the best tactic against numbers is solidarity. The ability to work as a team. We have nothing to be afraid of!
Levin: Oh, wow, Ms. Wordsworth! I can't believe how steadfast you are!

=D.E.R.=

Labyrinthia: Let's take a look at the Tactical Map we'll be fighting on.
Labyrinthia: We'll be starting here...
Labyrinthia: And the enemy line looks like this.
Labyrinthia: The "Steel Iron Body Shield" move, to put it simply, drastically raises the DEF and RES of its user.
Labyrinthia: Those parameters will become so high that most of our attacks will be rendered ineffective.
Labyrinthia: But if we had a method to damage them that wasn't affected by DEF and RES, that could give us a fighting chance...
Labyrinthia: By the way, Steel Body Iron Shield takes a heavy toll on the user's constitution. It'll probably reduce their HP a great deal.
That should be just the foothold we need to gain the upper hand in this battle.

Lluvia: Prepare yourselves!

[If one of the doppelgangers is defeated...]

-Another doppelganger joined the battle!-

[If one of the brothers is defeated...]

-Viento's/Lluvia's/Trueno's doppleganger disappeared!-

[The battle ends when all the enemies are defeated.]

Lluvia: Why...? Why must we end up on our knees...? How could we be beaten by those with fewer numbers and weaker bonds?
Labyrinthia: Because of the qualities of what we,re fighting for, and the quantities of those who support us.
Labyrinthia: Those are the differences that have decided our battles.
Viento: Hmph, brazen words indeed. But if you have the strength to defeat us, I suppose it proves them true...
Labyrinthia: ...
Trueno: Well, what are you waiting for? Why won't you just finish us off already? That is the priviledge your strength has won you!
Labyrinthia: ...
Labyrinthia: We...we can't do that.

[The brothers are surprised.]

Lluvia: Why not?!
Labyrinthia: Because if we were to do that, we would be validating your might-makes-right philosophy.
Lluvia: ...
Viento: ...
Trueno: ...
Labyrinthia: Tell me... Can only the strongest realize their ambitions?
Viento: Absolutely.
Labyrinthia: So if you found true strength, you could realize all of your hopes and dreams?
Trueno: That's what we're telling you!
Labyrinthia: If what you say is true, then the strong must be lonely indeed...
Lluvia: --?!
Labyrinthia: The strongest man would stand by himself, above all others. Is that not the very definition of loneliness?
Labyrinthia: Even if he could realize all of his dreams, they would undoubtedly be filled with sadness...
Lluvia: ...
Labyrinthia: That's not our desire. What we desire is for everyone to stand side by side, helping to build the future of this coutnry together.
Labyrinthia: After all, dreams realized through strength are just dreams of solitude, nothing more.
Viento: ...
Trueno: ...
Lluvia: ... My brothers... It is time to retreat.
Trueno: What are you saying?!
Viento: To slink away with our tails between our legs... Do you want to smear more filth upon our reputatiions? We can't afford to repeat the same mistake!
Trueno: We would be mocked to no end!
Trueno: This is just like you, brother... You've gone soft because our opponent is a woman!
Lluvia: I have made my decision, and you will abide by it!
Viento: ...
Trueno: ...
Lluvia: Chevalet Blanc... This victory is yours.
Lluvia: But strength still rules all... We will never renounce that belief! When next we meet, we shall settle this!

[The three warp away.]

Labyrinthia: Must we keep fighting it out until one side falls...?
Labyrinthia: ...
Labyrinthia: Even they must have realized the truth by now...

-Council Chamber-

Katrina: A great battle will be commencing soon, won't it?
Katrina: When I heard about it, I was so excited I could barely contain myself.
Katrina: A whole bunch of people will take up weapons and hurt each other, right...? I wonder what horrible torments we'll get to witness...

[Charlton makes a sour face.]

Charlton: What in the... Edna...would you care to explain?
Edna: This...this is Her Highness Katrina, princess medium and successor to the throne of Elesius...
Katrina: Edna promised me she'd drench this city with fear.
katrina: I don't really understand what it means to be afraid, but I do enjoy the fear that others feel.
Katrina: It puts me at ease, and calms the itching in my soul.
Rupert: Has she lost it completely...?
Charlton: ...
Edna: Charlton... We need to concentrate on setting our ambush for Chevalet Blanc right now.
Edna: This is no time to be pitting Eisen and Rupert against each other.

[After a moment, Charlton closes his eyes.]

Charlton: A fair point.

[Katrina smiles and clasps her hands together excitedly.]

Katrina: I hope it behins soon... I'm starting to get itchy again...

[The scene changes to outside in the courtyard, at nightfall.]

[NARRATIVE]: That night...

-Elesius Castle: Courtyard-

Rupert: Man, this place has taken a turn for the bizarre...
Rupert: If we'd kept on brawlin' back there, I probably woulda lost... Hate to say it, but that freaky princess saved my ass.
Rupert: In any case, I ain't plannin' to overstay my welcome. It's time to say adios to Elesius...
Rupert: No way I'm gonna let 'em off me before I get this damn sword figured out...

[A flashback sequence begins, showing Rupert standing behind a young Clarissa.]

Rupert: Wait up there, little missy.

[Clarissa turns around.]

Clarissa: --?!
Rupert: You runnin' an errand for your mom? Good for you!
Clarissa: ...
Rupert: Loosen up a bit, huh? I may not look it, but I'm a friend of your mom.
Clarissa: A friend of my mom...?
Rupert: Yep. Sure am. Here, this is for you.

[A cut-in shows a dandelion. Clarissa smiles as Rupert gives her the flower.]

Clarissa: It's so tiny...and beautiful...
Rupert: I'm helpin' your moom look for the Yggdrasil System.
Clarissa: Oh, really?
Rupert: We were s'posed to meet up today. Could you take me to her?

[Clarissa beams.]

Clarissa: Sure!

[A little later, on the outskirts of town, Clarissa runs up to Melissa and Felius.]

Clarissa: Hi, mom! I'm back!
Melissa: Clarissa, what took you so long? ...Hmm? Who's that?

[Rupert arrives behind Clarissa, smirking. Melissa and Felius immediately frown.]

Melissa: --?!
Felius: Clarissa!

[Rupert draws his sword while Clarissa's looking away. Melissa and Felius tense up.]

Clarissa: Mom, look at this flower...
Melissa: (If I use Iskender Bey now, Clarissa would get caught up in its power...)
Rupert: I'll take that!!!

[A slash flashes on the screen as Rupert attacks. A cut-in shows Iskender Bey sent flying in the air.]

Felius: Melissa!

[Clarissa stares on in shock as the screen turns sepia and the flashback ends. Back to Rupert in the courtyard.]

Rupert: I'm only interested in the good stuff...
Rupert: Adios, boss-man Charlton. And most of all...
Rupert: Adios, little missy and big brother. You two ain't nothin' but trouble... So do me a favor, and don't follow me around no more.

[Rupert turns and leaves. A blue-robed man watches him go.]

Robed Man: ...

[The screen fades to black and the player is prompted to save.]
