< Act 4-2 >
[On the world map, a link forms to Boot Hill, marked with a red !.]
Martial Guardsman: Commander--over there!
Rupert: Gimme those field glasses!
[The guardsman turns and hands the field glasses to Rupert.]
Rupert: Hmmm...
Rupert: ...
[He gnashes his teeth, eyes widening.]
Rupert: Hot damn... I thought that message musta been screwed up or something', but it really is little missy and her pals!
Rupert: They went missin' over a month ago, and now they're suddenly back and within strikin' distance of the capital... That's one hell of a cock-up!
Rupert: Damn... I can't afford another mistake like this. I don't have many points left to lose with the Council...
Rupert: Little missy's roach-like tenacity ain't as amusing as it used to be!
Rupert: This whole mess started with Iskender Bey. And I guess it's gonna have to be Iskender Bey that ends it, too...
[Flashback. The screen changes to a sepia-version of Felius, young Clarissa and Melissa. Melissa stands in front of the two, on guard. The characters' real characters replace the sepia.]
Melissa: We came out here looking for the Yggdrasil System, and ended up smack-dab in the middle of a monster pack... How could I be so careless?
Felius: Their numbers are slowly increasing... The longer we hesitate, the worse it'll get!
Clarissa: Mom!
Melissa: ...
Melissa: I'll unleash the power of Iskender Bey...
Melissa: I still don't fully trust that thing, but this is no time to be playing it safe...
[The screen turns black.]
Melissa: Out...of...my...way...!!!
[Slash. The same illustration as before is shown, where she slashes at monsters, but now Felius and Clarissa are standing back. Felius is behind Clarissa to cover her.]
Felius: Melissa wields Yulia's sword as if she were Yulia herself...
Melissa: Hurry! Grab Clarissa and follow me through the gap!
Felius: Will do!
[They run off. Rupert steps onto the scene behind them, smirking.]
Rupert: So that's the famous Melissa Arwin...
Rupert: Well, I suppose the sword's more famous than the skirt who wields it. The legendacy magic blade, Iskender Bey...
Rupert: Heh... What a tragedy to see a priceless weapon like that in the hands of some amateur. Wonder how I could go about rectifyin' that...
[He closes on eye and the background turns white and shows Clarissa.]
Rupert: Heh heh heh...
Rupert: Oh yeah, she's got a weakness all right. This is gonna be easier than I thought.
Enjoy that sword while you can, missy... I'll be comin' by to take it off your hands real soon.
[The image turns sepia and returns to Rupert gnashing his teeth on Boot Hill.]
Rupert: Tch... And I thought takin' that sword would be the easiest thing in the world...
Rupert: Get movin', men! If you can't score a victory here, then I don't ever wanna hear you callin' yourself Martial Guardsmen again!
Martial Guardsman: Yes sir!
[Tactical Map Style, the party arrives at Boot Hill to see a large party of guardsmen and Rupert.]
Rupert: My luck's been on the outs ever since I ran into you, little missy. That Iskender Bey is a demon blade if I ever saw one.
Clarissa: Well, give me back my mother's sword, then! You've hurt enough people with it!
Rupert: 'Fraid that's not an option, my dear.
I've run up a hell of a debt, you see...and the only way I can rid myself of it is with Iskender Bey.
I swear to you, someday the power in this sword is going to be mine...!!
=D.E.R.=
Labyrinthia: Let's take a look at the Tactical Map we'll be fighting on.
Labyrinthia: We'll be starting here...
Labyrinthia: And the enemy line looks like this.
Labyrinthia: Rupert's "Fast Draw" grows more refined and powerful every time we cross swords with him. His natural-born speed is simply astonishing.
His ever-increasing RFX, along with the number of turns it grants him, pose a dual threat to our forces.
Labyrinthia: And Rupert's Fast Draw isn't the only issue we have to deal with, either.
There's also the question of the Martial Guard detail supporting Rupert. We can't ignore them.
Labyrinthia: Don't let the enemy's leader decide how this unfolds. Keep the entire battlefield in mind at all times.
Rupert: Tryin' to reach the capital, eh? Not for much longer, you're not!
This Martial Guard's not the ragtag bunch of new recruits you used to deal with. They're well-trained fighting machines, now...and they're your final exam!
[The battle ends when all enemies have been defeated. More guardsmen arrive on the scene after the fight; a few run in front of and behind Rupert.]
Martial Guardsman #1: Commander Rupert! We're here to support you, sir!
Rupert: --?!
Martial Guardsman #1: We'll be expecting some bonus pay if we take these guys out, mind you!
Rupert: ...Oh, uh...right! Yeah! Hey, you couldn't have picked a better time to show up, guys!
Alexia: ...And ambush? Are those reinforcements?
Labyrinthia: ...
Rupert: I have a top-secret operation in the works... We're talkin' about one major offensive here!
Until the operation's underway, I want you to stop Chevalet Blanc in its tracks! Gimme your all out here!
Martial Guardsman #2: Wow, Commander! Got a cunning plan in the offing, eh?
Rupert: Uh, yeah...offing! There's gonna be a helluva lot of offing goin' on around here! It's a jack...uh...crackerjack operation! Yeah!
[Rupert runs off.]
Rupert: This is my Martial Guard! This is your Martial Guard! And the final whimper of Chevalet Blanc is but a moment away from reality!
Pull yourselves together one more time! This is the big one!
Martial Guardsman #3: Yessir!
=D.E.R.=
Labyrinthia: Let's take a look at the Tactical Map we'll be fighting on.
Labyrinthia: We'll be starting here...
Labyrinthia: And the enemy line looks like this.
Labyrinthia: I'm rather perplexed by the idea of a field commander leaving the...uh...field. Right in the midst of battle, too.
Perhaps he has some kind of grandiose secret plan in mind for us, ready to reveal at a moment's notice...?
...
Labyrinthia: Regardless, the Martial Guard before us is highly motivated and ready to fight. We can't afford to approach this battle halfheartedly.
Labyrinthia: In particular, the Emulator is a very tricky class. They're able to "Download" and use a wide range of other classes' skills.
Labyrinthia: We'll need to be fully prepared for anything...or else we'll be left flat-footed at the first unexpected attack they throw at us.
[The battle ends when all enemies have been defeated. Further away, Rupert stops running]
Rupert: I can't believe it...
Rupert: They may be my own men, but they're so dumb it's pathetic...
Rupert: As if anybody could actually come up with a plan to do something in a situation like that... Those idiots can't even use their heads!
Rupert: That damn sword... If I can just find a way to harness Iskender Bey's power, I can make up for all of today's losses and then some...
[He smirks.]
Rupert: Yeah. I'll do anything to get at that power... Anything at all...
[He walks off.]
-Elesius Castle-
Edna: Damned Chevalet Blanc! Have they returned from the dead just to torment me?!
[As she starts to walk, the Tormenta Triad warp in behind her. She turns to them.]
Edna: Tormenta Triad! What happened to Chevalet Blanc? Tell me you destroyed them!
Lluvia: As you insisted, we made covering your escape our top priority. We shall finish them off for good at our next opportunity.
Edna: Fools! You pathetic fools!
Viento: --!
Trueno: Huh?!
Edna: You just do exactly as you're told? Any fool can follow orders! Show some backbone, dammit!
Edna: I thought you were supposed to be world-famous villains! I expected a whole lot better than that!
You should've been able to protect me AND kill them with ease!
Lluvia: ...
Viento: The nerve on this one...
Trueno: You have the gall to complain? After we saved your life?!
Edna: Such...such impudence! Have you forgotten who your employer is?!
Lluvia: Allow me to give you one piece of advice.
Lluvia: Your power does entitle you to speak and act as you please.
Lluvia: But one day, that attitude of yours will drive everyone close to you away. In fact, perhaps it already has?
Edna: Hmph! If you enjoy butting into everyone else's business so much, maybe you should go find Chevalet Blanc and kill them already!
Edna: Believe me--if you don't kill someone when you have the chance, it leads to all sorts of problems down the road!
Viento: ...
[Viento warps away.]
Trueno: Like we needed you to tell us that!
[Trueno warps away.]
Lluvia: We'll finish them next time. You'll see!
[Lluvia warps away, leaving Edna alone. She puts her hand on her hip.]
Edna: Indeed...if you don't kill them when you have the chance, they torment you forever...
[The screen turns black and we hear a loud rumbling. Then we see a sepia illustration of Edna leaning over a collapsed Alexia, covered in dirt, holding a knife behind her back. The colors replace the sepia.]
Edna: Are...are you dead?
Alexia: *Huff...huff...huff...*
[Alexia lifts her head weakly to look up at her.]
Edna: Eeeeeeeeeeekkkkk!
[Alexia faints. The illustration turns sepia again before returning to Edna in the castle.]
Edna: I had the chance...but I flinched.
Edna: If I had only killed her when I had the chance, none of this would have happened...
Edna: ...
Edna: And if it's true for one sister, it's probably true for the other as well...
Edna: That creepy little puppet princess, Katrina...
Edna: If I have nothing more to gain from letting her live... This time I won't flinch...!
[The screen fades to black and the player is prompted to save.]
