< Act 1-13 >
[On the world map, a link is formed from Rhino River to Dead Plateau, marked with a red !. Clarissa walks up and stops just as the colors invert for a split second.]
Clarissa: --!
Clarissa: ...
Clarissa: What...what was that sensation?
Labyrinthia: Did something happen?
Clarissa: I...I don't know. Just my imagination...?
Labyrinthia: This is a wasteland. The life force has seeped from the earth, reducing it to a barren desert in which no sprout can take hold.
Labyrinthia: Fortunately, due to the blessing of the Guardians, you don't see many places like this in Elesius.
Clarissa: Guardians... I've heard of those. They're divine entities whose strength sustains the kingdom of Elesius...right?
Labyrinthia: Yes, essentially. I'm surprised you know that.
Clarissa: My mother devoted herself to finding a way to restore life to Filgaia.
She pursued a great many legends about the Yggdrasil System, said to have the power to bring abundance to withered land.
Clarissa: We chased that goal together throughout Filgaia, and heard a great many stories along the way. I think that's how I first learned about the Guardians.
Labyrinthia: I see...
Labyrinthia: But if I may point out a slight error in your understanding, the power of the Guardians is not actually restricted to the kingdom of Elesius.
[Clarissa looks a little surprised.]
Clarissa: The power of the Guardians extends to other lands?
Labyrinthia: The power of the Guardians forms a network of "ley lines" that sustains the whole of Filgaia.
Labyrinthia: The special blessing that makes the kingdom of Elesius exceptional does not come from the Guardians directly...
Labyrinthia: It comes from the princess mediums of Elesius, who share a special empathy with the Guardians.
Clarissa: Princess...mediums?
Labyrinthia: The ability to communicate with the Guardians has been passed down through the blood of the women of the Elesian royal line.
All princesses of Elesius have the potential to access it.
Labyrinthia: The power of the princess mediums has helped Elesius prosper for centuries...but...
Labyrinthia: ...
Clarissa: What is it?
Labyrinthia: A year and a half ago, the unthinkable occurred.
Labyrinthia: ...
Labyrinthia: It was at the "Rite of Divine Coalescence"...
Labyrinthia: That's the ritual in which a princess of House Elesius forms a bond with the Guardians.
But this time, the girl emerged from the ritual without any trace of a princess medium's power.
Clarissa: ...
[Labyrinthia hangs her head.]
Labyrinthia: That girl was Alexia...the late Princess Royal of Elesius, who was assassinated by the Council shortly thereafter.
Clarissa: --!
[Felius and Levin run up to them.]
Levin: Your Highness! Ms. Wordsworth!
Felius: We're surrounded by monsters--and it looks like a pretty tough breed.
Felius: In this empty wasteland, I guess predators can't afford to be picky when choosing their prey.
=D.E.R.=
Labyrinthia: Let's take a look at the Tactical Map we'll be fighting on.
Labyrinthia: We'll be starting here...
Labyrinthia: And the enemy line looks like this.
Labyrinthia: Here we have two types of monsters...Rhinoceri and Gremalkins. A simple, but dangerous, mixture.
Labyrinthia: Rhinoceri are lumbering, thick-skinned animals, but Gremalkins are nimble and strong against magic attacks.
They must be tackled in completely different ways.
We'll need a party with two sub-squadrons--one to dispatch the Rhinoceri, and another to handle the Gremalkins.
Labyrinthia: This area is stalking grounds for a wide variety of monsters, I would surmise...
We could have other monsters show up in the middle of battle. Make sure you have ample healing supplies at hand--this could prove to be a long engagement.
-You may now use the "Lock-On" command.-
-You may now use "Combination Arts".-
-Tutorial: About Combination Arts-
* Select the "Lock-On" option when attacking, and your unit will target an enemy and end its turn.
* When another unit attacks the target you've locked on to, the group will unleash a Combination Art, a powerful magic attack.
* The more units locked on to a single target, the more devastating the resulting Combination Art will become.
[When three enemies have been defeated...]
-Reinforcements appeared!-
[The battle ends when all enemies have been defeated.]
-Council Chamber-
Charlton: ...
Charlton: So that's the new product you're peddling? You always come up with such dangerous toys.
Weisheit: In developing it I used all of the materials that you so generously entrusted with me--
Your procedures and rituals, your spells and incantations, they are all a part of this.
Weisheit: If this toy is dangerous, it is largely due to your own contributions.
[Charlton smirks.]
Charlton: How does the parable go? "Even the mightiest lion can be felled by the lowliest worm?"
All the worm needs to do is work its way in undetected, and devour the beast from within.
Weisheit: And it's not just the beast that's devoured.
Weisheit: When no one knows who's carrying the parasite, it breeds suspicion and distrust of all. Bonds of friendship and unity are often consumed as well.
Charlton: Have you made all the preparations?
Weisheit: The product has already been placed in the vicinity of Chevalet Blanc.
Charlton: Excellent work.
Weisheit: I hope the final field test will serve as an adequate demonstration of the product's capabilities.
If it meets your expectations, I would be most eager to discuss future business plans with you...
Charlton: We cannot entrust the future of Elesius to a princess who failed at the Rite of Divine Coalescence. Traditions must be honored.
Charlton: I trust you can encourage her to step down from the stage?
Weisheit: It is my pleasure to comply.
[Back at the plateau...]
Clarissa: I don't see any signs of monsters anymore, but we still shouldn't let down our guard...
Levin: Your Highness! I'll go scout out the area ahead!
[Levin runs off.]
Clarissa: ...
Clarissa: Hey, how did this area become such a wasteland?
[Labyrinthia closes her eyes.]
Labyrinthia: I've heard that there was a massive battle here a long time ago. A war, really.
Clarissa: A war...
Labyrinthia: The devastation caused by the powerful weapons of that era sapped the earth itself of its vitality.
Felius: Clarissa, take a look at this.
[A cut-in shows something similar to an ARM, but primitive and caked in dirt.]
Labyrinthia: That's a broken ARM... A relic of the ancient battle waged here long ago.
Clarissa: ...
Levin: Your Highness!!
[Levin runs up to them.]
Levin: It's him! It's that guy from before!
[The mercenary walks up to them.]
Clarissa: You...
Burly Mercenary: Well, we meet again.
Felius: ...
[He looks at the ARM and folds his arms.]
Burly Mercenary: My, that ARM you have there is nearly 200 years old. You don't see a model like that too often. I imagine it would fetch a high price from a collector.
Clarissa: Do you know a lot about ARMs?
Burly Mercenary: I suppose I know a little bit more than most...
Burly Mercenary: But surely you know a whole lot more about them than I?
[He grins.]
Burly Mercenary: Alexia Lynn Elesius, Princess Royal of the Kingdom of Elesius.
[Felius' position becomes defensive.]
Felius: --!
Clarissa: I don't remember introducing myself to you...
Burly Mercenary: "The princess is actually still alive..." "She leads an army called Chevalet Blanc..." "Chevalet Blanc is at war with the Martial Guard..."
Burly Mercenary: In every city and town, the gossip is the same. Everyone knows it by now.
Burly Mercenary: And to think I just happened to run into the woman who's the talk of all Elesius.
Burly Mercenary: Can you believe that? Now, are you really the princess?
Clarissa: ...
Burly Mercenary: If you are, I've been quite rude. I really should introduce myself.
Burly Mercenary: My name is Ragnar. Ragnar Blitz Lebrett. Just an ordinary Drifter who's never far from the battlefield.
[The screen fades to black and the player is prompted to save.]
