I stare out the window at the people moving along with their day. I bet they’re only concerned with where to eat next and what movie to see later.
My hands rest on my stomach. There’s life inside there, a brand new baby girl or boy who’s counting on me to protect them.
I’ll never forget my sophomore year in college. Never forget the friends I left behind, the life that was ripped away.
Footsteps sound on the stairs behind me, but I can’t pull myself from the window. Can’t pull myself away from the uncomplicated normality of the lives that are going on outside these walls.
Strong arms surround me, hands resting on my stomach. I catch the gleam of a wedding band in the window and look down at the contrast of silver metal on dark skin.
He says things are different this time. He promises that he’s not like the other guy, that I won’t have to go through the misery alone if something goes wrong.
“Hey,” he whispers in my ear, and I lean back in his arms. I need to stop thinking like this; I’m not twenty years old anymore.
“Hey yourself,” I say turning from the window and looking into his brown orbs. He smiles at me with love and the promise of a bright future in his eyes.
This baby is a joint commitment of our love to one another, a symbol of our devotion and strength, and together we will welcome him or her into the world.
I kiss him slowly, praying he understands that even though my mind rebels with worries from the past, I believe in his promises.
The people outside may have lives void of fear and what ifs, but I have love. I have David. I’m not alone.
