Re: Unlucky in Love (Part 1 of 2) anonymous May 29 2012, 07:50:18 UTC
Filled:

Not for the first time in his life, Kilowog wonders what makes Hal Jordan so special.

Even as a rookie, he was a Green Lantern prodigy; the Guardians, who usually can never remember the particular attributes of a given recent recruit, knew Hal Jordan after just the first week of his training. He stood out, in more ways than one; he was the first Earth-man, sure, but there was something more than that... Hal was practically the embodiment of willpower, of everything the Lantern corps stood for, and everyone took notice.

Kilowog remembers training him, remembers coaching him through the fighting and the drills, and remembers thinking that there was something different about this one. That this recruit had potential that hadn’t really been seen before.

And when Hal decided to take the Interceptor for a joyride, it strikes Kilowog that it seemed natural that the younger Lantern, the less experienced one, would take over as Captain of the ship. Kilowog remembers that all of the communications with the crew of the Interceptor were directed to Hal, and he remembers that the Guardians, even when chastising him, could focus on Hal only. They were drawn to him, still are drawn to him, and he commands their attention with experience and charm.

Kilowog wonders why that is, why it seems so natural for all of them to focus on him and listen to him and accept him. Why it’s so easy for Hal to command a room and attention, why everything comes so easily to him and why it seems like it always will.

But more than that, more than Hal’s talent (which he has come to accept) or Hal’s leadership abilities (because he’s natural, he’s so natural with everything), Kilowog wonders how Hal could have been so damn lucky not only to be talented and fearless, but to find the love of his life, and have it be her.

How it is that Hal could be so damn special that his love, that Carol Ferris could withstand the power of the Star Sapphire ring, could ignore the drives to keep Hal safe and restrained. He wonders what it is about Hal that could make it so easy for Carol to renounce the ring.

Because surely it cannot be Carol herself. She is strong, yes, and truly a warrior, but so is Galia. Galia is just as strong in will and just as intelligent and has just as large a warrior spirit as Carol Ferris. Galia is not weak, and if so Galia cannot withstand the power of the Star Sapphires, then Kilowog doubts Carol Ferris can, not on her own.

So he wonders, again, what it must be about Hal Jordan that he can even override the influence of the Star Sapphire ring with just his words and his presence.

Or, and Kilowog doesn’t want to think this but the more that he concentrates on this problem the more he comes to this conclusion, is it that Hal isn’t quite as special, that Kilowog was the one who was not strong enough.

Was it his fault? Was he not good enough for Galia to overcome the power of the ring? Was their love not as strong? Could it have been him that failed her? Was she fighting against the ring, needing only the slightest push from him to overcome her state when he gave in to her?

He thinks again of Galia, so beautiful, so strong, so courageous. He thinks of her and he knows that it could not have been her fault, and it cannot have been Hal’s fault, so it must have been his. He failed his love. He failed her village by not being able to save her, and he failed her by leaving her on that planet. He failed her by not going after her again, by not trying harder or fighting against her or caring more that she was there and not at home.

He failed her.
